We had a great time volunteering at United Community Center in Milwaukee yesterday! Arts and crafts at the Adult Day Center before doing a neighborhood cleanup, what a rewarding way to spend the afternoon!
November cooking class - we travelled to the Middle East (through imagination) to make kebabs! The origin of kebabs is thought to begin from the country of Turkey when soldiers would grill fresh meat from hunted animals on their swords over fires.
We also made a Persian cucumber/pomegranate/feta/mint salad, basmati rice and experimented with infused water by adding crushed cucumber and mint leaves with pomegranate juice.
A couple members recently had a birthday so we celebrated with cake and ice cream as well! Needless to say we were all pretty full after this.
Today we went on a field trip to the Milwaukee Domes! We learned a bit about tropical and desert ecosystems while looking at some neat plants.
Members discussed how the Domes play an important role for Milwaukee by promoting conservation, ecological literacy and allowing people to feel like they're in another country or dream vacation all right in our own community!
For our October cooking class, we rolled out handmade pasta to make fettucine carbonara! A traditional Italian recipe.
The members made and kneaded the dough then rolled it through a pasta roller to produce fresh fettucine. To make the sauce we mixed the pasta starch water with romano cheese and an egg. Can't overcook it though or you'll get scrambled eggs! Then a flower cut tomato garnish to work on our knife skills. Pan fried polenta and sautéed spinach was our vegan alternative.
Stay tuned for next month's menu!
Patty and Josh, our Community Outreach team, out gathering leaves for a project on Friday!
Our first cooking class of the service year! To start off we explored what is flavor, why there are so many flavors, and how to balance them to make a delicious meal. Next, we went over how to properly handle a knife and different ways to prepare ingredients by cutting same size shapes and determining textures and flavors over cooking time.
QUIZ: Do you know what Umami is? (answer in the comment section!)
Our meal was autumn inspired! A cranberry and apple salad with a house made vinaigrette, butternut squash risotto, then we learned how to break down a chicken before braising it.
If cooking is a passion for you, we still need a Family Education AmeriCorps Member who would be facilitating cooking classes with neighborhood families! Apply at sschc.org/get-involved/americorps
