Amazon has been fined for violating safety regulations in Minnesota that the Teamsters Union fought for and won in the state’s warehouse quota law.

OSHA cited the company for two infractions at its warehouse in Shakopee, MN, including failing to protect workers from ergonomic hazards and not providing employees with written quotas. The Teamsters and other community allies secured protections for warehouse workers in Minnesota as part of the union’s wider push to win state and federal legislation to combat Amazon’s abusive treatment of warehouse workers.

By forcing its workers to comply with arbitrary and unrealistic production quotas, Amazon has caused on-the-job injury rates to skyrocket. The recently introduced federal Warehouse Worker Protection Act supported by the Teamsters would require large warehouse employers to disclose quotas to workers and prevent those quotas from interfering with workers’ health and safety. It would also direct the Department of Labor to create new rules requiring safe warehouse design.

The Teamsters have advanced the Warehouse Worker Protection Act in state legislatures where it is now the law in California, New York, Oregon, Washington, and Minnesota. It has also been introduced in more than a dozen other states. The Washington state warehouse worker protection law goes into effect yesterday.

Today, Teamsters join communities around the nation to honor the 159th anniversary of Juneteenth, a federal holiday marking the end of slavery. Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger, along with more than 1,800 federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to take control of the state and ensure freedom for the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the area.

As a union deeply committed to equality and justice, the Teamsters proudly celebrate Juneteenth. Our long history of putting these principles into practice is reflected by the millions of American workers of all backgrounds who have been raised into the middle class thanks to their Teamsters contracts. Our union has a long history of fighting for equitable union contracts, supporting the recognition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday, and forcefully speaking out against systemic racism in America.

Today, we stand in solidarity with our Black members and all African Americans in the fight for racial justice and equality in the workplace and throughout society. ✊

IOWA IS ON WATCH 🚨🚨🚨🚨

Teamsters Local 238 Secretary Treasurer Jesse Case has a message for the Iowa Legislature:

“In the video posted Thursday evening, Jesse Case, secretary-treasurer of Teamsters Local 238, which represents a variety of government employees, expressed his frustration with Senate Study Bill 3158, saying the measure is “another attempt to bust public sector unions across the state."

Case says in the video, “But guess what, we’re fighting back. We’re not taking it. Here’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to take the fight to them. We’re going to take the fight to their town, to their county, to their farm, to their business. We’re going to have rolling strikes across the state of Iowa.”

****2023 JOINT COUNCIL 32 ENDORSEMENTS****

***REPORT SHOWS UNIONS CREATE GOOD, FAMILY-SUPPORTING WAREHOUSE JOBS COMPARED TO AMAZON'S SUBSTANDARD WAGES***

From the IBT:

A new report from our friends at the National Employment Law Project shows how substandard Amazon's pay is compared to other warehouse employers.

The new report also finds pay is insufficient for Amazon warehouse workers to approach even average earnings in the counties where they work. On average, warehouse workers in high-earning Amazon counties make 18 percent less—$822 less a month—than warehouse workers in comparable non-Amazon counties.

The report contrasts Amazon pay in the industry with pay at Teamster-represented warehouse employers:
"Joey Alvarado, 42, makes almost $30 an hour moving boxes filled with pet food, shampoo, canned goods and other items sold by Stater Bros. Markets, a southern California supermarket chain. His wife stays home with their three children, and the family eats out twice a week, has a boat called Penny Lane and a travel trailer. They vacation on Lake Havasu and the Colorado River. They’re buying a 2,000-square-foot home on half an acre…Alvarado belongs to the Teamsters Local 63, which he sees as the difference between what he is paid and what Amazon workers are paid. He has been on the job 19 years and plans to remain. He doesn’t pay any premiums for medical benefits for himself and his family members and has a pension.

"'We won historic raises in our new contract at UPS by organizing with our coworkers to demand what we deserve. I come from a struggle with a low pay rate, often going broke within hours just to pay bills, eating inexpensive meals, and seeking assistance to cover expenses. Now with the new contract, I make $21.50/hour, and I am able to provide more support to my family, enjoy better Friday meals, save up to buy a car, and avoid the unpleasant experience of taking smelly buses. Now, I will be able to reduce my transportation time from 45 minutes to 30 minutes to get home. These companies make billions and can afford to pay us enough to afford food and a roof over our heads. Every warehouse worker should have what we have, all we have to do is fight for it.' — Aldo Navarette, part-time UPS warehouse worker and member of Teamsters Local 804."

A Good Living: Amazon Can and Must Make a Middle-Income Livelihood Possible for the People Who Work in Its Warehouses This brief includes a series of recommendations aimed at ensuring that Amazon lives up to its promise of being a leader in worker compensation. ***WHEN TEAMSTER WOMEN FIGHT,
TEAMSTER WOMEN WIN!***

General President Sean M. O’Brien and General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman welcomed more than 1,500 Teamsters gathered for the 2023 Teamsters Women’s Conference in Nashville on Monday.

"The only reason why we're successful is because of the support, the courage, and compassion of the rank-and-file members who build this union every single day," O’Brien said. "Everyone in this audience is a fighter.”

“I’m pleased to announce that this is the biggest Women’s Conference we’ve ever had — more than 1,500 women registered for this year’s conference!” Zuckerman said. “It’s women that our leading the way and driving these campaigns. That’s how we’re able to organize. That’s how we’re able to fight back against corporate America. Because of you.”

The Joint Council 32 is especially proud of ALL of our Teamster Sisters across MN, ND, SD, and IA. The showing of solidarity in Nashville is incredible!
