STATEMENT FROM MINNESOTA AFL-CIO PRESIDENT

Tim Walz is one of us who fights for working people like us every single day.

St. Paul – Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernie Burnham made the following statement on Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s selection as Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate:
“As Minnesotans, we’re proud to have one of our own on a Presidential ticket. As working people and union members, we’re even more thrilled to have one of our own as the Democratic nominee for Vice President.

“As a parent, educator, coach, soldier, Congressman, and Governor, Tim Walz will be a Vice President who knows firsthand the challenges that working Americans and our families face and what we need to improve our lives.

“Over the last two years, Governor Walz and the DFL majorities in the Legislature partnered with Minnesota’s Labor Movement to enact one of the most pro-labor legislative agendas in state history.

“Thanks to our shared work Minnesotans will have one of the most progressive paid family and medical leave programs in the nation, safer workplaces, more wage protections, tens of thousands of new construction jobs, reproductive freedom protected by law, fully funded schools & public services, free nutritious school meals for our state’s kids – and most importantly greater freedom to organize unions at their workplaces.

“Vice President Harris has played a key role in the most pro-union administration in our history and Governor Walz has been a true partner in making Minnesota the best state for working people – we are committed to sending them both to the White House in November.

"The rest of the country is about to find out what working Minnesotans have known for years – Tim Walz is one of us who fights for working people like us every single day.”

08/06/2024

Governor Tim Walz will be a strong partner in the Harris White House, fighting every day to improve the lives of workers in communities across America.

Gov. Walz is a former public school teacher and union member who has proven that a pro-worker agenda is a winning agenda, especially in competitive states. He has delivered on a comprehensive, pro-union legislative package and created the gold standard for state governments aiming to do right by workers.

We know Walz will deliver for working people across the country as vice president, just as he has throughout his career.

The labor movement stands united behind the Harris–Walz ticket, and we are ready to help defeat Donald Trump, JD Vance, and their anti-worker Project 2025 agenda in November.

Kamala Harris taps Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as Democratic running mate 08/06/2024

Good choice!

Kamala Harris taps Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as Democratic running mate Gov. Tim Walz supporters say the ex-Army National Guard leader, former teacher and past congressman could help Harris in the Midwest. But he also comes with baggage from nearly two decades in political office.

City Employees Local 363 members approve tentative agreement with Minneapolis Park Board!

BREAKING! Minneapolis Park Workers Approve New Contract After 22-Day Strike | Today, Minneapolis Park workers, represented by LIUNA Local 363, voted overwhelmingly to approve a new contract with the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board.

AJ Lange, Business Manager of LIUNA Local 363, issued the following statement:

"Our members' sacrifices and solidarity yielded more than improved wages and benefits. We reaffirmed that Minneapolis is a union town. This victory extends beyond our union, demonstrating the power of working people when they stand united.

“We stood up against anti-worker, union busting at the Park Board and sent a clear message all workers deserve dignity and respect.

"Our members’ courage and resilience is truly inspiring and I’m proud to stand beside them. Their sacrifice and solidarity carried this fight.

"This contract fight is only part of our shared struggle for dignity and justice for the working class. Together, we'll build on this momentum to create stronger, more equitable workplaces for fellow working people.

"To everyone who supported us—joining picket lines, contacting commissioners, signing our petition, and donating to our hardship fund—your solidarity made a crucial difference. This victory belongs to all who stood with us."
