Joyce Haase Obituary (1952 - 2024) - Legacy Remembers 07/18/2024

Dear Bethany Alumni,

On Wednesday, July 11, Joyce Haase passed peacefully into the presence of her loving heavenly Father, surrounded by family.

Joyce loved the Lord and loved people so beautifully. She was an incredible friend and a bright light to all who knew her. After she graduated from Bethany, she served more than forty faithful years with the mission, touching the lives of countless students and missionaries. What a gift she has been to this community throughout her whole life.

The livestream for the Celebration of Life in her honor will be available on the St. Michael’s Lutheran Church website. The service will be Friday, July 19 at 11:00 AM CDT. Link in the comments.

From Carol (Billman) Freeman in regard to these pictures of prayer cards made for "The Bergh Sisters"

One would think that they would have chosen one country to go together to, as close sisters who had been inspired by Bethany to walk closely with Jesus and to go to the mission field. But no, they felt God leading them in three directions. My aunt Thea spent 30 years in northern India. For more than 100 years, this area was known as the graveyard of modern missionaries with little fruit. Now there is a great movement of God in that part of the world and millions are becoming followers of Jesus Christ. You can read one amazing account in the book "Bhojpuri Breakthrough". I know my aunt sowed many tears and prayers for those people and is now rejoicing greatly to see the fruit. My aunt Marge spent 30 years in Liberia. She described her life to be like the three parts of a sandwich. The bottom bun was the 30 years in preparation for the mission field. Then the middle was the 30 years in Liberia and last 30 years afterwards was the top bun, spent in intercession for Liberia and the world. She said the best part was the meat in the middle! My mom went to Guinea-Bissau and they were there nine years doing leprosy work and sharing the gospel. They went on to Vietnam, Timor, and then back to Ghana to retire for a total of 22 years. My mom treasured the mere two months in Timor the most of all! Great fruit came from that. You can read about it in my moms book.

Aunt Thea was 99! Aunt Marge was 96. My mom was only 90. Too young!

A few days before her aneurysm December 22, she had confided to a friend that she didn't want to celebrate another Christmas without Herb who had passed 4.5 years prior. She hadn't told us family that but the friend told us after she passed. So she was hovering between the two worlds that last Christmas. God granted her desire. The only communication she gave that week was the raising of her hand briefly when we would all gather to sing around her bedside. She joined in the only way she could. She passed peacefully in the middle of the night as Martha and I were turning her to prevent bed sores. She had said to us girls earlier that year that she hoped one of us would be at her side when she passed. God granted that as we both had her actually in our arms as she drew her last breath. So precious how God honored her in that way.

Not just anyone can walk in and not just any time either. But please do come when called and don’t be late. Wear clean, pressed clothes and use your lint brush. It will be worth the extra effort, for her guests will enjoy a dinner that will be not only flavorful, but very nutritious. She’ll let you know which vitamins and minerals are included and how they aid your body too. The stark white tablecloth will have been ironed and the settings perfectly placed around the fragrant hyacinth centerpiece. She’ll wear something in navy blue she sewed herself, and will be pleased if you ask her about it and notice the perfect stitching. You should learn which fork to use. Her sharp eyes will notice if you don’t, but her kindness would never mention it.
Her cool green jade mothering is at its best when nursing a feverish child, or husband, her pure platinum efficiency attending to every detail. Her teaching emphasizes the practical skills life will require. You may be a little surprised to see the gentle softness of her bright eyes, if she lifts her guard. But you’ll have to get her to stop her duties long enough to do that. She may wear gray or beige, but she dreams vividly each night of the five green shades of her favorite wilderness.
Her love will go unnoticed if you’re looking for anything overt. Her love song could never include loud hooting or crowing. No, my mother’s love is the simple and beautiful song of the Nightingale before taking quiet flight into the sapphire blue sky.
