Our firefighters down in New Mexico with a heartwarming story! Thanks to FF Nate Sink for the account on this one!
“I learned today that it’s common for cow elk to abandon their calves when stressed, during a fire for instance. This morning while patrolling a burned area I came across a malnourished and lethargic calf elk. I carried her out to the engine and thanks to was able to connect this sweet girl to a Veterinarian that specializes in rehabilitating wild animals, especially elk! The most incredible outcome for such an incredible day!”

From running rivers to packing stubborn mules, anterior shoulder dislocations are associated with an array of outdoor pursuits.
Our approach to this injury involves a detailed assessment and thoughtful consideration of patient and situation variables. If the decision is made to attempt field reduction, we recommend passive techniques that facilitate fatiguing the involved muscle groups allowing for a relatively spontaneous reduction as opposed to pulling or manipulating the humerus back into position. It’s not that such techniques are wrong, but we’re operating without the benefits of imagery, and our students may very well be performing the procedure for the first time.
Here’s a great post from showing a variation of one of our recommended techniques.

Check out Dr. Jess Mason talk about the DAVOS technique for shoulder reduction. For more procedure videos like this, check out EM:RAP HD!

Attention out-of-hospital providers who operate in resource limited environments (aka wilderness medicine professionals): licensed paramedics, RNs, NPs, PAs, MDs, and DOs who provide care in wilderness, remote, and/or austere environments.
The International Board of Specialty Certifications () is conducting a job task analysis of the wilderness/remote medicine community with the goal of creating a specialty certification for Wilderness Paramedic/Practitioner.
Please consider completing this survey if you provide professional care (this can include volunteer positions) where the natural environment significantly impacts access, care, management, extrication, and transport of your patient.

Our Story
Aerie instructors John Bleicher, RN, EMT-P, Bill Taylor, RN, CCEMT-P, and David McEvoy, CCEMT-P began teaching wilderness medicine classes in 1995 with Missoula Emergency Services. Dr. Greg Moore served as our Medical Advisor. In 1997, we incorporated as Educational Services, doing business as Aerie School for Backcountry Medicine. We chose the name Aerie because of its connotations of wildness and the unique perspective gained in such a location. In 1995, we taught two wilderness first responder courses in Missoula to the Student Conservation Association. We believed then, as now, that sound medical decisions were based on informed patient assessments and that quality medical education should focus on teaching people how to conduct these assessments. We have always stressed that almost anyone can learn how to perform a particular skill; the difficult matter is making the decision to do it.
From 1995, when Aerie taught 30 students in Missoula, to 2018, when we trained thousands of students throughout the US, Mexico, Central America, Africa and India, we have remained committed to quality. While growth highlights our success, we understand that it is not the most important index. Instead, we regard our student feedback, which is extremely positive, and the increasing number of personal referrals our students and host-agencies give to others, as our most important confirmation. We are a private, for-profit organization that believes in supporting its instructors and the communities where we teach.
