As of June this year, there are still over 400 children on Nakuru’s streets. In the last two years, Agape has been working to do direct reintegrations to help get these kids home, but in our thirteen years of reintegrating children with their families, we have seen that it is vastly more effective when these children have had a buffer time of rehabilitation on campus before reintegration.

That’s why this new center in Nakuru is such a huge step in the process of our ministry there. If you would like to help us raise the other half of the cost of opening our newest center in Nakuru, just mark your donation “Nakuru” in the comments of your donation. What favorite foods are you looking forward to this season? 🌞

The thing that looks like mashed potatoes is actually ugali, a porridge-like starchy dish made of maize. It features high on the must-have dishes list of many of our staff as well as the kids who pass through our doors, and is a regular staple for meals at our campuses. In Kenya, ugali is as comforting and solid as bread is to westerners. Many Kenyans will even tell you they don’t feel full without ugali! It’s just that important of a dish!

If you got our newsletter last Thursday you will have heard the big news we promised! 🌞

Agape has found a location for our future rehabilitation center in Nakuru! 🎉

This is so, so exciting because though we have been operating in Nakuru and working there to get kids home for about two years now, we haven’t had a place where the kids could spend time to heal from their traumas before family reunification. And this is essential because we have found that children who have had rehab time on campus before going home are more likely to stay home. Having that healing time as a buffer is truly essential to kids staying home long term.

You can read all about the new location in our latest newsletter here: https://mailchi.mp/agapechildren/fall2023_quarterly
This location is a huge gift from the Lord and will require so much less renovation than if we were to try to build from scratch.

Last but not least, thanks to a very generous donor who paid for half of the cost of opening, we only have half of the cost to raise! If you would like to give towards the new Nakuru center, just write “Nakuru” in the comments of your general donation. https://agapechildren.org/donate/ 🎉

The things we take for granted, things like clean water, a safe place to sleep at night, family who love us--these are the things we provide to children in need. We provide all these things. We connect children with family. But the biggest thing-- knowing God--that's something we will continue to share for as long as we exist. Because Living Water that lasts and quenches your thirst, shelter in the Most High who will never leave you, and eternal family with God--these are worth far more.

Stay tuned for our quarterly newsletter-- dropping in your inboxes this week!

It's a scary thing to ask for forgiveness. It's scary for our kids to go back to family members and others they've wronged and seek reconciliation.

But we teach children that God is with them and will help them through their fears! When the day comes to seek forgiveness from others, they know their social worker will be there to protect them from any true harm. But they also know, if they believe, that God is the one who will always be there, even when their friends at Agape can't be.

What fears are holding you back today? God is there to hold your hand through it!

R E U N I T E 🌞 In 2010, we started to seriously incorporate family reunification into our ministry model, and we have never looked back.

Families need each other, and children, most of all, need the love and support that only a family can give.

In case you were ever wondering…

We don’t use stock photos, but instead use photos of actual ministry, our actual staff, and real photos of children and families we work with. That’s why we don’t use real names when we share real children’s stories, and we also don’t match up the real photo with the story. The safety and privacy of the kiddos and their families is one of the most important things to us!

Richard* ran away from his dad after failing to fetch water from the river as he was asked. He neglected to do it while he was out, and he was afraid of being severely punished for this, so he ran away.

The police found him and referred him to Agape, and we were able to take him in for a short time of rehabilitation while we assessed his situation. After some home visits, his social worker placed Richard with his grandparents.

Agape was able to arrange for a reconciliation between Richard’s mom and dad who were separated and living apart, and we also arranged for a reconciliation meeting between them and Richard. Mom and dad are now back together, and Richard lives with his grandparents, as this was a better and more stable fit for him. He is living happily with them and is learning welding in an apprenticeship. Richard also accepted Jesus as his personal Savior and is growing in his faith and enjoys participating in church activities with his grandparents. Please pray for Richard and for his parents to improve their relationship.

You can be a part of stories like Richard’s when you become a Reunite a Family partner. $1 a day for a year will see one child home to their family.

We don't do traditional altar calls at Agape, instead preaching the message of the Gospel and encouraging children that they can always ask the pastor if they want to know more. This is because we want children to make an informed choice from their own hearts, and not just say a prayer to please the teacher. If you are looking for God with your whole heart, you will find Him!

"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes..." Romans 1:16

R E D E E M is the foundation for all we do at Agape. We present the redeeming message and love of Jesus Christ to see lives transformed through God’s truth. Because the horizontal reconnection between children and families is absolutely strengthened by a vertical reconnection with God.

A very happy Mother’s Day! 🌞

05/13/2023

GRATITUDE and PRAISE for mothers, not just this Sunday, but always 🌞

We can't help but notice that the "Proverbs 31 woman," though often discussed for what she does, is not as often talked of for what she receives: gratitude and praise.

We see, especially in our line of work, that not every good mother receives gratitude, that not every mother has children or a husband, that not every woman who wants to is able to be a mother, and that not every mother is good. Yet, throughout Scripture, it is evident that God sees, knows, and recognizes mothers' hearts and the love and care they hold. We also want to say thank you, to mothers, birth or adoptive, would-be or have loved and lost. You are appreciated and loved and known!

We Exist to Save and Restore the Lost

Agape began in Kisumu, Kenya in 1993 as a response from the compassionate heart of our founder, Darla Calhoun, RN. Darla was working in community health in the villages and small towns surrounding Kisumu. Whenever she came to town for supplies or to pick up her mail, she would immediately be surrounded by groups of begging street boys.

They were dirty. They were hungry. Some of them were sick. Many of them were high from sniffing glue. They were desperate. And she knew in her heart she needed to do something to help them.

She began giving them small bags of peanuts to eat or pieces of soap so they could bathe in nearby Lake Victoria. As the number of boys flocking to meet her grew, she began to meet with them in one of the town parks.

Alarmed by the prospect of as many as 80 to 100 street boys all gathering in one place at the same time, city officials told Darla she would have to end her meetings in the park. At that point she boldly asked the city to provide land where she could care for the boys. In the meantime, she rented a small house, hired a cook and a guard, and invited five boys to leave the streets and come live at what she called, “Agape.”
