This little dude has taken up residence in the Library! We think he might be getting ready to battle Godzilla for the role of official library mascot.
That last pic tho 😅
Librarian Gina is getting in those virtual (and actual) miles for our Summer Reading “Road Trip” while in Tahoe! “I appreciate that ‘Make Time’ isn’t about answering more emails or clearing your to-do list: it’s about identifying what really matters to you (personally, professionally, or otherwise) and making sure you’re carving out time for it every day, rather than letting other people’s Slack messages or the “infinity pools” of social media and TV suck up your time and make the days blur together. And these authors should know: they are the product designers who helped build Gmail and YouTube.” And with that, I’m blocking Instagram and signing off for the weekend 😉👋
How are you doing on our summer reading challenge? It’s not too late to get your reading log — link in bio! 🔗
This is librarian Sarah’s pic of the book “Erasure” by Percival Everett, taken at the “Holy Wasting of Time” Cummins Retreat at the Russian River earlier this summer. Sarah writes: “‘Erasure’ was adapted into the Oscar-nominated film ‘American Fiction.’ It’s about a Black author and professor who wrote books no one reads, and then in anger wrote (with a pseudonym) a trashy book with terrible stereotypes that went on to earn him huge movie and critical acclaim. What made the book so different is that it felt like two books. Within the story of the author’s journey was 40 pages or so of the text of the book he wrote. It’s jarring! I picked up a total of 715 miles for the summer reading road trip with this pick! It was 265 pages but counted for three special categories (published 10 years ago, Black voices, made into a movie).”
Wishing all a fabulous reunion weekend of reliving fond memories and making new ones! Stop by the Library between 1-5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday to check out what has changed and what remains the same. Even after you graduate, the Library is here for you!
And the answer is… that giant book has 2220 pages. .aa had the closest guess in the reel comments with 2000.
Science librarian Margot has already gotten in gear for our Summer Reading “Road Trip”: Lasallian Style! 🚗🗺️Margot recommends “The City We Became,” by N. K. Jemisin:
👉 “I love N. K. Jemisin’s writing, so when I saw this new science fiction series I was excited! This first book builds the world of modern-day New York with an alternate multiverse layered over the top, and I look forward to reading the rest of the story that builds on these origins. We’ve got a world where cities are embodied in human form, and New York is the newest, burgeoning collection of people finding their place as representations of their boroughs. They have to defend from an onslaught of outside forces trying to overthrow their existence through fascism and hatred, and the battle ensues! Check it out!”
✏️ Log a mile for every page you read, and see if you can make it across the country to our fellow US Lasallian universities! Make sure to take advantage of “mileage multipliers”—this book gets 100 extra miles for the Black Voices category.
Shout-out to senior Kristen Dougherty, who has been the talent behind most of our content this year! As the Library’s outreach assistant, Kristen created social media content; filmed videos; coordinated events; represented the Library at fairs; provided invaluable insights into how to better reach SMC students; and created and taped up approximately a million posters. She has been reliable, efficient, creative, and a blast to work with. Our outreach program was more active this year than ever, in large part because of Kristen’s efforts behind the scenes. And she did all this while serving as the director of , wrapping up majors in Marketing and Digital Media, and landing a post-grad internship in marketing. Congratulations, Kristen; we’ll miss you!

Join the Library and for a screening of the documentary “Laboring with Hope,” followed by a student-led discussion about Black maternal health.
From the Network of the National Library of Medicine, which is sponsoring our access to the film: “Going through pregnancy and delivery should be a joyful time and a safe experience. However, for many women of color this is often not the case. Black women have higher rates of complications, and according to the CDC, are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than White women.
“Laboring with Hope is a 30-minute documentary on maternal morbidity and mortality among Black women. The film combines personal stories and expert perspectives to provide a call to action to implement, support, and uplift strategies to improve maternal health and birth outcomes.“
Join the SMC Library and Saint Luke’s Pre-Health Society next Monday April 29 at 5:30 pm for a special screen of Laboring with Hope”. A documentary shedding light on Black maternal health in the the US. Following the screening there will be a student lead discussion on the themes and topics of the film. Refreshments provided!
