Journalist Clay Risen wrote a beautiful piece about the life and legacy of Lorenza de’ Medici for New York Times.

Lorenza de’ Medici Elevated Italian Cooking passes away at the age of 97.

"A descendant of a storied family, the Matriarch of the historic Badia a Coltibuono winery in Tuscany, an author, TV host, and cooking school director who showed that Italian cuisine was about more than tomatoes, pizza and pasta.

“Before Lorenza de’ Medici began publishing her cookbooks in the late 1980s, Italian cuisine outside of Italy was often considered unremarkable fare: red sauce, white sauce, pizza and pasta, all of which could be whipped up in haste from frozen, processed ingredients.

But in books like “Italy the Beautiful Cookbook” (1988) and “The Renaissance of Italian Cooking” (1989), and later in her 13-part PBS show, “The de’ Medici Kitchen,” Ms. de’ Medici showed that Italian cooking could be something else entirely: light salads and soups, elegant preparations and, above all, fresh ingredients, ideally bought that morning from a local farmer.

Her books were lavishly illustrated with sumptuous photographs of Badia a Coltibuono and other estates, most of them owned by her friends and accompanied by tantalizing narratives of languorous meals shared during her tours of the country.

In other words, she was offering a lifestyle — and in the 1990s, those who remodeled their kitchens with terra-cotta, sandy marble and floral tiles in the so-called Tuscan style, or ate at one of the countless upscale trattorias that opened that decade, were experiencing a part of her expansive influence.

She also took notice of the cooking schools popping up at wineries and estates around southern Europe and realized that she could offer something similar at Badia a Coltibuono.”

Binomio Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC 2019 is a collaboration between Fattoria La Valentina and inama_wine

🍇Binomio is an encounter between two people a vineyard between sea and mountains and an expression of Abruzzo’s strong but gentle goodness.

🍇In our opinion, the Montepulciano variety cultivated in the Abruzzi clearly has a Greek/Balkan origin, due to its complex morphological characteristics, its vigour, and so on. We also believe that it became widespread in the very distant past, perhaps even in pre-Roman times, when it made its home in the Peligna Valley between the villages of Raiano and Sulmona, which, as history would have us believe, was colonized by Paeligni people coming from Asia Minor or Illyria in approximately the 12th century BC.

🍷The 2019 Binomio Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC

🍇Montepulciano 100% – Africa-Binomio clone from a 4.2 hectare single vineyard of 50 year old vines in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore.

🍷 Fermentation in vertical vats, with pumping over and careful management of temperatures and of the days of maceration. Racking of 80% of the wine into barriques and tonneaux (some new, others previously used one or two times) and 20% into concrete tanks. Maturation for 12 months, selection of the blend, racking, no fining and just light filtering prior to bottling. 18 months’ bottle aging before release.

🏆 We are honered the Enthusiast recognized Binomio in this way

ELENA SPIRITS VERMOUTH DI TORINO SUPERIORE BIANCO TIM 21 - White Vermouth: The Unexpected Twist

🍸When we talk about vermouth, the first image that comes to mind is a red, aromatic, and intense fortified wine. Have you ever tried a white vermouth? Here are 5 reasons why a lover of Spirits should give white Vermouth a chance.

1. IT HAS ANCIENT ORIGINS: In 1786 Antonio Benedetto Carpano, a renowned herbalist and distiller in Piemonte, created the first recipe for vermouth by infusing white wine with a variety of botanicals and spices. We come full circle, as Elena and Luca Currado Vietti dip into their own family history for the recipe for their Vermouth di Torino Bianco Superiore

2. IT IS A DELICIOUS, REFRESHING DRINK: Try it neat, with a couple of ice cubes. Add a lime or orange zest if you want to try a more aromatic approach. You can also add a touch of sparkling water and lemon.

3. GREAT ON ITS OWN OR WITH FOOD: Once you have experimented with white Vermouth as a cocktail, then you can delve into a truly special pairing: try it with a small tasting of semi-hard cheeses.

4. IT HAS A PRIVILEGED RELATIONSHIP WITH GIN:
Because of the organoleptic characteristics of Vermouth, the pairing with Gin within cocktails is perfect. More than perfect, in fact: we might call it sumptuous. The aromatic notes of Gin harmonize with the characteristics of white Vermouth, creating balanced, aromatic, and intense cocktails. Of course we suggest you pair it with our Elena Dry Gin.

5. WHITE VERMOUTH… OF LANGA: A good reason to try white Vermouth? The scents of Langa. Yes, because if you choose Elena Spirits, you will be able to savor our exclusive Vermouth di Torino Superiore Bianco TIM21 based on Timorasso-Derthona. An inspired, elegant, rich in scents, sensual bouquet produced with a blend of local botanicals from an ancient family recipe.

Adami “Vigneto Giardino” Prosecco Superiore DOCG Dry Rive di Colbertardo was one of the featured wine in Alan R. Tardi recent seminar “Original Prosecco" in New York last month.

2022 ADAMI Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG Dry Rive di Colbertardo Vigneto Giardino

🍾”Vigneto Giardino represents the denomination’s very first single-vineyard Valdobbiadene DOCG. It debuted as Riva Giardino Asciutto in 1933 in Siena, at the 1° Mostra Mercato dei Vini Tipici d’Italia (1st Exhibition of Traditional Wines of Italy), and ideally exemplifies what Adami characterizes as its macedonia (fruit salad in Italian): the crisp fragrance of a harvest-box of fresh-picked fruit.

🍾Giardino is made from 100% Glera from Vigneto Giardino, a naturally south-facing vineyard at 200 to 250 meters. The soil is calcareous with clay rock substrates, dry, infertile and shallow. There are 2,550 t0 3,000 vines per hectare and the training system is double arched cane. Harvest is from September 30 to October 10.

🍾The clusters are pressed in pneumatic presses and the must is given a gravity settling for clarification. It is naturally fermented with cultured yeasts at 17-19°C, then the wine matures a minimum of six months sur lie in steel.

🍾 It receives its effervescence via the Italian Method, at 15-17°C. and the resultant sparkling wine is then cold-stabilized at -4°C.

🍾The wine has hints of apple, peach, notes of wisteria and acacia, and a touch of citrus.” -Charles Scicolone

Is Summa the Future of Wine Fairs? - Trink Magazine 07/20/2024

Great piece on alois.lageder and the Summa event that coincided with VinItaly.

“Summa began 28 years ago, when winemaker and local eminence Alois Lageder invited business partners to join him for dinner ahead of Vinitaly. That dinner has since become an annual tradition – and much more. This year, Lageder opened his doors to 114 estates and 2,400 visitors over two days.

The Lageder’s manor house, Ansitz Casòn Hirschprunn, was built in 1363 as a farmhouse. Early medieval rusticity eventually gave way to Italian Renaissance and Baroque. Ansitz Löwengang, just around the corner and dating to the 16th century, has been the estate’s home since 1934. In a place already full of history, each vintage of Summa writes a new chapter — adding to 200 years of wine history for the family and 600 years of cultural history for this village.”

John Mariani profiles TTenuta Sant'Antonioin Forbes.com

Four Brothers At Tenuta Sant’Antonio Are Working To Improve The Image Of The Wines Of Veneto

The Castagnedi family that owns Tenuta Sant’Antonio winery has been a leader in trying to change the image of Veneto wines. Now, with 247 acres of vineyards, they are focusing on Valpolicella, Amarone and Soave, evolving from the strict DOC and DOCG regulations of the byzantine Italian wine laws to improve the varietals, as well as making IGT wines that allow wineries to experiment with any grapes they wish to make modern Veneto wines.

Aldo Fiordelli mentions Tenuta SCERSCÉ in his piece “Valtellina’s Nebbiolo delle Alpi” on jamessuckling.com.

"Among the newer Valtellina wineries, Tenuta Scerscé stands out for the balance and finesse of its wines, in particular its Petrato 2021, another wine from Sassella, which has silky tannins and a super-graceful floral profile. (95 points"

Also reviewed were the new vintage releases from Tenuta Scerscè 2021 “Essenza” Valtellina Superiore DOCG 92 points, 2020 “Infinito” Sforzato di Valtellina DOCG 92 points, 2021 Flammante Valtellina Superiore Inferno DOCG 91 points, 2020 Cristina Scarpellini Valtellina Superiore Valgella Riserva DOCG 94 points. Read full reviews in link below 🔗

“If wine regions were measured in terms of their beauty, Valtellina would rank right at the top. Its 820 hectares of steep, terraced vineyards run through a valley of nearly 120 kilometers that reaches 800 meters in altitude at its peak. The sandy loam soils found there are mainly the result of a retreating glacier, and the morainic terraces, some on glacially smoothed rocks, are a unique natural spectacle.

Generally, thanks to the mitigating influence of Lake Como, Valtellina’s five subzones go from the warmest to the coolest, starting with Maroggia at the beginning of the valley, then Sassella, Grumello, Inferno, and Valgella. The wines from Maroggia are more approachable than the others, and those from Valgella are leaner but also very elegant.

Nebbiolo grapes, known as chiavennasca in Valtellina, at one time needed greater concentration from the “appassimento” process (partial dehydration) to produce great wines, but things are a different today, as shown in Valtellina Superiore wines.

Danilo Drocco, a leading oenologist in Valtellina, told Senior Editor Aldo Fiordelli that the region’s wines today resemble Barolos made by the renowned Prunotto winery in the 1960s in that they come from vineyards with low yields, which heightens tannin quality.”

SUMMER NEGRONI? Choose ELENA GIN!

🍸🇮🇹 Elena Gin is featured in Food & Wine Magazine’s 10 Gins That Are Perfect for Summer Negronis

➡️ “For those seeking a seasonally appropriate Negroni, pairing the right type of gin to warm weather is paramount for the perfect drink. Ideally it should be a gin that emphasizes crisp and clean notes, alongside summer aromatics that often include citrus forward aspects.

🍸 #2 ELENA SPIRITS London Dry Gin in a Langa Style: The label calls this gin “London Dry and in the Langa style,” a reference to the part of Italy’s Piedmont region where it’s produced — specifically, Serralunga d’Alba, which is known for its standout wines made from Barolo. Juniper, black elderflower, wild mint, chinotto peel, and maritime alpine juniper lift this one to aromatic heights, and allow it to play brilliantly with the Campari of a Negroni and remain refreshing.”

🥃 🇮🇹 NEGRONI RECIPE:
- [ ] 1oz Elena Gin
- [ ] 1oz Elena Vermouth di Torino
- [ ] 1oz Distilleria dell’Alpe Rosen Bitter

1. Fill a mixing glass with ice.
2. Add liquor to the glass.
3. Stir for 10-15 seconds.
4. Strain the mixture into a chilled glass filled with ice.
5. Garnish with an orange peel.

We were saddened to learn of the passing of Lorenza dé Medici Stucchi, the matriarch of Badia a Coltibuono. Sending our loving thoughts to her children, Emanuela, Roberto, Paolo, and Guido and their families.

Lorenza dé Medici di Ottajano was a descendant of the Neapolitan branch of the House of Medici. She met and married Piero Stucchi Prinetti, in Milano. He had just taken over the management of Badia a Coltibuono from his mother, Maria Luisa Giuntini.

Lorenza began her career as an editor of Nova and International Vogue. Subsequently, she wrote a series of children’s books, followed by over 30 cookbooks, including the iconic Italy The Beautiful published in 1989.

Lorenza was instrumental in spreading the word of Italian culinary culture on an international level. In the early 1990s, her 13-part series on Italian cooking for PBS “The dé Medici Kitchen" enlightened many to the wonders of Italian cuisine. She established "The Villa Table" cooking classes at Badia a Coltibuono in the 1980s, which was one of the first of its kind.

From a NY Times article from 1987:

“She is the epitome of a certain, unmistakably Italian chic. Tall, slender, handsome and quiet-spoken, on a recent visit to New York she wore a discreet string of pearls and an elegantly draped silk shirt, in sage green, selected perhaps to match the gray-green of her eyes.

She carries one of the most eminent names in Italian history and is the doyenne of Badia a Coltibuono, a Tuscan wine estate that traces back its heritage a thousand years or more. But Lorenza de' Medici is a thoroughly modern woman, who began a career as a magazine editor in her native Milan at a time when a woman in Italy could not open a checking account without permission from her father or husband.

These days she can be found jetting back and forth between Europe and America, perhaps officiating at tastings of prestigious Badia a Coltibuono wines in San Francisco, presenting Coltibuono's luscious olive oil in New York, demonstrating her own interpretation of Italian cuisine in Dallas or, back in Tuscany, presiding over a cooking school in her home.”

Rest in peace.

Valpolicella Rocks: Tenuta Sant'Antonio - Haute Living San Francisco 06/24/2024

Laurie Jo Miller Farr featured Tenuta Sant’Antonio in a profile piece for Haute Living San Francisco.

Now approaching a 30-year milestone in the history of Tenuta Sant'Antonio the Castagnedi brothers’ dream is alive and well in the hills above Verona, known worldwide as the City of Love.

Not far from the vineyards where the brothers played as children, they took the far-sighted decision to purchase land in the rugged and steep Monti Garbi, now an agricultural site renowned for innovative wine growing.

Valpolicella Rocks: Tenuta Sant'Antonio - Haute Living San Francisco At wine tasting and lunch with Armando Castagnedi, owner of Tenuta Sant’Antonio family winery in Italy’s Veneto region, I solved this riddle. Q: What is even better than one charming, skilled, prestigious Italian wine producer? A: Four of them that share the same vision and even the same surname...

Matthew Kaner penned a piece on the 30th anniversary of Casa Vinicola Garofoli Podium Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore for his Men’s Journal wine column.

Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi is an unsung hero of the Marche region of Italy, where crisp and fresh white wines leading with minerality have been the fashion for decades. The grape has been building off it's immaculate reputation since around the 4th Century B.C., and this year with the 2021 vintage of 'Podium', Garofoli is proud to celebrate their 30th release of the flagship Verdicchio.

World Lambrusco Day is a global celebration of the popular Italian sparkling red wine known as Lambrusco. This annual event was originally celebrated on the Summer Solstice, but today we celebrate on June 21st, this Friday. World Lambrusco Day is a perfect way to kick off your summer and raise awareness about this delicious and versatile wine.

🍾Lambrusco has a long and rich history dating back to ancient times. The Lambrusco grape variety is native to the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, where it has been cultivated for centuries. Cleto Chiarli began producing Lambrusco in his Osteria in Modena in the early 1800 and in 1860 established Chiarli 1860. In 2002, the 4th generation, Mauro & Anselmo Chiarli, began building a new facility to produce a higher-end line of Lambrusco wines using carefully selected, estate-grown grapes and state-of-the-art equipment. The new company was named Cleto Chiarli after the founder.

🍾Lambrusco is a unique wine that is made from the Lambrusco grape variety. There are over 60 varieties. It is known for its slight fizziness, vibrant fruit flavors, and versatility when it comes to food pairing. Lambrusco can be bone dry to semi-sweet and is always refreshing.

🍾In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in traditional, high-quality Lambrusco wines made in dry or off-dry styles. Wines like Cleto Chiarli Vecchia Modena & Vigento Cialdini began being recognized worldwide for their complexity, versatility, and ability to pair well with a wide range of foods.

🍾On World Lambrusco Day, wine lovers around the world are encouraged to enjoy a glass of Cleto Chiarli Tenute Agricole Lambrusco and share their love for this underrated wine. Many restaurants and retailers are holding special events and tastings to celebrate this special day.

🍾Mark your calendars for this Friday and be sure to raise a glass of Lambrusco on World Lambrusco Day to join in the global celebration of this unique and delicious wine. Saluti!

Amanda Gabrielle, of Inside Hook, featured several wines from the Dalla Terra portfolio in her most recent piece about chilled red wine for summer.

🍷CLETO CHIARLI VECCHIA MODENA NERO LAMBRUSCO GRASPAROSSA 2023 (formerly Vigneto Cialdini)
As one of our tasters exclaimed, “lambrusco is underrated,” and I couldn’t agree more. Cleto Chiarli Vecchia Modena is one of the most elegant wines in the category, made from 100% Lambrusco Grasparossa through a single fermentation under pressure, rather than two. Our tasters found it “nice and dry with a good, crisp flavor” and “very drinkable.

🍷ALOIS LAGEDER SCHIAVA ALTO ADIGE DOCM 2022
Though you might be most familiar with white wines from Alto Adige, the region was more famous for its red wine for decades, and the schiava grape in particular. While Lageder has been experimenting with creating schiava wines that have more weight and structure, this is still fresh, balanced and elegant, and our editors found it “kind of funky” and “earthy.” One taster mentioned it’s “light and tasty with a little tang,” making it perfect for warm-weather sipping.

🍷TENUTA SANT’ANTONIO VALPOLICELLA DOC, 2022
This wine, a mix of corvina and rondinella, is nothing short of beautiful. Nanfrè is Tenuta Sant’Antonio’s young Valpolicella, which went through malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks with no oak aging. Our panel found it “light and airy,” “easy drinking,” “sophisticated” and “nice for all occasions.”

Drink of the Week: Cleto Chiarli "Vecchia Modena Premium" Lambrusco 05/28/2024

Penelope Bass featured Cleto Chiarli Vecchia Modena Premium Lambrusco as the Drink of the Week for Imbibe Magazine.

“…..Forget any preconceptions you may have about overly sweet, grape soda-esque Lambrusco. Cleto Chiarli Vecchia Modena Premium is made with 100 percent Lambrusco di Sorbara grapes (the lightest of the variety), the wine pours the dark pink color of Clairet. Vibrant with the flavors of tart red fruit, the dry, delicately fizzy wine made the perfect accompaniment to our snack board, with enough acidity to cut through the salty meats and creamy cheeses, while accenting the sweetness of the fresh berries. At less than 20 bucks a bottle, it’s a steal any night of the week.”

A new label & bottle for Cleto Chiarli’s single vineyard “Vigneto Cialdini” Grasparossa di Castelvetro Secco DOC ➡️ VECCHIA MODENA NERO

🍇The Tenute Cialdini estate, located in the town of Castelvetro, has been in the Cleto Chiarli family for over 130 years. This 50-hectare estate is named for the famous, locally born General, Enrico Cialdini. Within the estate is “Vigneto Cialdini”, a 12.5 ha vineyard planted to Grasparossa “red stem”, an ancient autochthonous varietal which produces a wine that is ruby red in color; fresh, fruity and rich with fragrances of berries, black cherries, strawberries. “Vigneto Cialdini” Lambrusco is the highest expression of this historical grape and an iconic wine for the Chiarli family.

🍾 Vecchia Modena dates back to 1890. Chiarli Vecchia Modena won the first international recognition by a Lambrusco wine at the World Expo in Paris in 1900. The bottle and label of today’s Vecchia Modena Premium Lambrusco di Sorbara are reproductions of an 1892 bottle —the oldest existing bottle containing Lambrusco—that is still treasured in the Chiarli archives today. In 2002 the wine was reintroduced as Vecchia Modena Premium and in 2008 it was the first Lambrusco DOC wine to be awarded the Tre Bicchieri from the Gambero Rosso. Today Vecchia Modena Premium represents the most successful Cleto Chiarli Tenute Agricole wine, both in Italy and in the United States. The North American market is important for Lambrusco and Cleto Chiarli, and with this in mind the family wanted to rededicate their most important Grasparossa wine, by giving it the name Vecchia Modena Nero!

🍷With the 2023 vintage Vigneto Cialdini Grasparossa di Castelvetro Lambrusco will become Vecchia Modena Nero Vigneto Cialdini, joining the popular Vecchia Modena Premium, both showcasing the expression of quality from the two Cleto Chiarli cru vineyard wines. “Vecchia Modena” is destined to act as an ambassador, right down to the name of the city that is the cradle of Lambrusco, linking its name to the wine, and to the Chiarli family. Three icons in one: ancient city, a historic family and great wines.
