Myth Buster Monday
“Running is bad for your knees.” “Running causes arthritis.” I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this come out of people’s mouths. I’ve heard it from patients. I’ve heard it from physicians. I’ve heard it from family members who tell me that if I’m not careful I’ll end up with arthritis from all the running I do.
Well joke’s on them! Running is good for you! It’s good for your joints, muscles, and cardiovascular system. It is completely safe as long as you’re properly taking care of yourself and increasing training appropriately.
A study published in 2017, found that recreational runners are actually less likely to have hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA) than those who are sedentary. The prevalence of OA in recreational runners was 3.66% compared to the 10.2% of non-running, sedentary individuals.
The caveat is that elite and professional runners are more likely to experience hip/knee OA than recreational runners. It is unknown if this is due to their high running volume, previous injury, or other factors.
So if you love running, run on friends!

This is my favorite holiday. My family gets together at my grandparent’s every year. We eat a lot of food, usually play golf in 30 deg weather, take a lot of naps, and then finish up with family game night.
I know everyone’s holiday will look different but I hope you’re all able to spend today enjoying loved ones, relaxing, and filling your cup up (literally and figuratively).

Total rest for a tendinopathy is NOT the answer.
When runners, lifters, or any active human increases training too quickly, it's possible to end up with a tendinopathy (previously tendinitis). This just means that the load has exceeded what the tendon is capable of managing.
This alarms many people because pain is misunderstood and can be scary. So they end up going to a physician/ other healthcare provider to figure out what to do. Many of these providers don’t understand the rehab process and I don’t blame them. That’s not their job. It’s mine!
I was talking to a friend recently. He was having moderate achilles pain. I told him to come in and see me and we’d get him a strengthening program and nip it in the bud before the pain got worse.
Well, he ended up going to see his P*P first. The P*P recommended a heel lift. This is not the issue. I sometimes recommended these in order to help decrease pain levels while my patients continue to run and rehab an injury. The issue is, he only recommended the heel lift and not rehab to accompany it.
So guess what? Ding ding ding! The heel pain got worse. It was bad enough that it altered his gait, and soon the other heel started to hurt.
Now my friend has been told to take an extended break from running to let the tendon heal. But what the physician either doesn’t know or didn’t tell him is that he can rest all he wants, but when he goes back to running that tendon STILL won’t be able to handle the load placed on it, because there was no strength program implemented to address the weakness. So the heel pain will come back.
This process is so frustrating to me. Healthcare is supposed to be collaborative in order to get the best result for the patient. But this happens all too often.
So if you are experiencing something similar, get in touch with me. If you’re not in Tennessee, I will point you in the direction of a wonderful PT near you. I know it’s become the norm to see a P*P for everything but they truly don’t know how to rehab injuries. It’s time to start seeking out the healthcare provider who is the best fit for the job at hand.
It's okay to get a second opinion and a third and a fourth. Health is one of the most valuable things that you can possess. Without it, activities like playing with your kids, vacation, exercise, etc become difficult to enjoy.
Our healthcare system teaches us to look at our insurance plans and let them dictate the providers that we’re able to see instead of picking someone based off of their skillset and who would be a good fit for us. This often leads to subpar care and frustration with the treatment plan.
I truly believe most people in healthcare get into the profession to help people, but the companies that they work for are businesses first. It is frowned upon most places to refer out to another provider in the same profession, for example, a physical therapist referring to another physical therapist. This loses the company money. The issue is that a referral may be in the patient’s best interest. There are many providers that are great at treating a certain injury/body part/niche, but you can’t be great at everything. So instead of telling someone that they should “never squat again” or “never run again”, refer to someone else who may have more experience than you in that particular area.
If your provider is not willing to discuss other options with you other than completely stopping an activity (without explanation), find a different provider. Healthcare is supposed to be patient centered- this means the plan of care should fit with YOUR goals and life.

Most running injuries occur due to training error. When the load you’re placing on your body/tissues exceeds your body’s capacity to tolerate that load, you get injured.
This can occur if you--
- Increase mileage too quickly
- Don't get enough rest
- Lack prerequisite strength
