This is the last weekend to see Beyond the Star Store! 💥 The gallery is open today until 5:00 and we have a table set up outside with some merch for sale.
It’s hard to believe it’s been a year since we learned about the closure of the Star Store, and we still feel the impact of its closure every day. A huge thank you to everyone who came to our opening last week and to the incredible artists who made it possible! You can read more about the artists and the exhibition in Don Wilkinson’s article.
‘More Than Just A Building’ a love letter to those who called Star Store home - The New Bedford Light It was never just about the building. It was about the camaraderie and the constructive criticism, it was about the solidarity and the support system and the culture and the community and the care. It was about romancing the past, revering the present and readying for the future.
The Star Store was not a UMass Dartmouth pit stop - The New Bedford Light A year after Chancellor Mark Fuller abruptly closed the New Bedford CVPA campus, students look for ways to keep arts in the city.
Ahead of our opening tomorrow, we wanted to share with everyone that Beyond the Star Store: More Than Just a Building will likely be our final exhibition in the current gallery space at 65 William Street. The past 9 months have been incredible and we are deeply committed to remaining a vibrant part of New Bedford and celebrating the incredible talent within our community. Please join us during AHA! Night as we come together to celebrate this journey and the legacy of the Star Store. 🌟
It has been almost a year since we lost the beloved Star Store building. On August 14th, 2023, we received the “unexpected” news of the Star Store facilities’ closure, abruptly ending a 23-year involvement of the CVPA in downtown New Bedford. This space was a crucial part of arts education and a cultural hub for so many, and truly was more than just a building.
Thanks to unwavering advocacy and the amazing support of our community, we’ve been able to keep the spirit of this alive in New Bedford. In December 2023, we opened the Star Gallery to preserve this important connection. We are immensely grateful for the support from the Greater Southeastern Labor Council, the generous contributions from donors, and the efforts of the community and students deeply affected by this closure. It is because of this collective support that any of this has been possible.
The colors in the painting are fun! You can see them at the The Star Store alumni exhibit this Thursday during AHA! New Bedford
That’s a wrap for the AMP*ED pop up! 💫

In preparation for our next exhibition, Beyond the Star Store, the gallery will be closed until August 8th. We hope to see you there 👋
We invite you to join us for our next show, Beyond the Star Store: More Than Just a Building ⭐️

Fallon Navarro a fierce advocate … and an imaginative artist - The New Bedford Light UMass Dartmouth MFA candidate may be best known for her role as leader in the Star Store fight, but the very reason she came to the program was to make art and to display it publicly.
