The American caste system began after the arrival of the first African slaves to Virginia in 1619. Caste is the powerful infrastructure that holds each group in place. Race in the United States, is the visible agent of the unseen force of caste.
The artwork's strength is that the hierarchy can be changed. This piece is intended to stimulate discussion.

It's ! This Monday, we're hearing from Keith M. Francis about his inspirations and history with NBAM.
"As a Visual Design and Communications instructor, NBAM has been a positive influence with my students' participation in the Teen Artist Internship Program (TAIP). This program has provided mentoring, art education and confidence to the students. The TAIP exhibition within the museum is a celebration and testament to the belief that anything can be accomplished with desire and a strong work ethic.
As a fine artist, my piece featured in NBAM, “Border Nation,” is a LED neon sculpture, investigating the long-running and emerging crises forcing significant new displacement in the world. Migrants and asylum seekers face increased barriers to reaching international destinations and safety. While gains made by the far-right, populists in Europe and elsewhere faced some reversals in 2019, hardening attitudes about migrants and refugees spurred violent attacks in New Zealand, Poland, South Africa, and the United States. My neon sculpture expands a tradition of conceptual art works executed in light, from American artists Dan Flavin, Bruce Nauman and contemporary artist Glenn Ligon."
See the work of all our amazing artist members on view at NBAM until May 8, 2022!

Man-made climate changes involve increasing atmospheric concentrations of CO2, methane, water v***r and nitrous oxide,
and other chemically manufactured greenhouse gases. We can still make a difference before we deplete earth of its live sustaining
ability and avert a catastrophe for our planet, by human will and action starting now.

-- Democracy: It’s a Game (2018)
Repurposed 1969 Gottlieb pinball machine, wood, graphics, glass and electronics.
Democracy, it's a Game is a conceptual, multi-layered, artwork exploring the idea of democracy in the US. The uncertainty of political outcomes is inherent in democracy, which makes all forces struggle repeatedly to realize their interests. Our broad individual interpretation of democracy adds another level or complexity to this piece. Democracy has rules, exhibits competition, challenges, skills, strength and luck; in the negative case the system is manipulated and unscrupulous behind the invisible walls of speculative Capitalism.
