Community Boating Center
Community Boating Center of New Bedford (CBC) is a non-profit educational organization
Community Boating Center offers a variety of educational and recreational programs throughout the year built on the rich waterfront heritage of New Bedford. Community Boating Center strives to instill in the young and continue to teach people of all ages the value of integrity, sound judgment, teamwork and environmental awareness. We do this by offering educational opportunities and access to the marine environment, regardless of means, through instruction, mentoring and coaching.
This summer we hosted our first SYPS Staff Family and Friends evening! It was a blast seeing our young instructors show off their skills to their friends and family.
A few photos from our final HS Open Sail of the season! What a day!
Meet Chris!
Over the last couple of months, we've been working with Susan Israel from Climate Creatives to create an art installation on our pier to show projected sea level rise in 2030, 2050 and 2070. Next time you're near our headquarters, take a look!
Thank you to Susan, George Kirby Jr. Paint Company, and New Bedford Local Cultural Council for supporting this project!
This program is funded in part by a grant from the New Bedford Local Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, a state agency.
Meet Izaiah!
Tomorrow will be a beautiful day to be on Palmers Island!
Volunteers are needed for the next clean up of Palmers Island on Sept. 14! And a first for New Bedford -- the Clean Coast Coalition will be using their aqua-drone which conducts water quality testing, records and transmits live footage, and filters debris out of the water. For more information, check out the flyer below!
Operation Clean Sweep
Thank you, Ricardo!
Tonight we hosted our first Annual Alumni Sunset Sip and Sail. What a beautiful evening!
This event is a token of appreciation for our current and former staff who have contributed to making CBC what it is today. Alumni, please make sure you are on our mailing list to keep up to date on future opportunities like this!
We're so happy to help with this exciting project!
Fresh public art coming June 2025.
When you see a public art director shoving discarded materials in her car, you know something’s up…. Help us create the next work of art by giving DATMA your giant pieces of textile materials (boat sails or upholstery fabric or you tell us.) DM us to coordinate. And THANK YOU in advance.
Come join our department at our Ricketson Nature Center this weekend! This is a FREE program! 🤩

Our youth teams had a blast sailing in the Ida Lewis Yacht Club Distance Race!
Giving a huge shoutout to the Youth Challenge teams that competed in the 2024 Ida Lewis Distance Race! This year there were four, all in Coronet class: “Digger” (top finisher), “Vento Solare”, and the CBC (Community Boating Center) New Bedford Youth Offshore Team entries “John and Dorothy” & “Red Shift”.
Pictured here from “John & Dorothy” are Hannah Clark, Sophia Lito, Avni Heller, and Anyis Mendes. These sailors are all junior instructors at CBC, representing a new generation of youth to our sport.
Congratulations teams! 👏🏻
Teaching fundamental offshore skills! During the idalewisdistancerace we were setting up for a gybe and had five eager youth sailors ready to do this.
Summer is flying by and we've been having a blast. Can't believe how much fun we packed into the first half!
Overheard in Blue Pod: “I wish I could spend the night here and be here in the morning”
Meet Lyla!
I will be a freshman in the nursing program at UMass Dartmouth this fall. I have been sailing with CBC since middle school. I am an instructor at CBC because I love sailing and want to give back to my community. CBC has taught me a lot, and I always look forward to working with the kids, helping others, and being a mentor. My best sailing memory is sailing a pico with my cousins and an instructor.
Session 3 is off to a great start!
Voyaging on “the watery part of the world” has been a part of growing up in New Bedford for generations. Our Offshore Sailing Program is designed to build confidence, camaraderie, and leadership skills, as well as seamanship and navigation skills.
Started in 2022, this program builds on the success of existing learn-to-sail and instructor training programs at CBC. It ties into the CBC goal of developing capable, hard-working, personable young adults, who are also ocean stewards.
Through these training, each sailor gains open water experience with focus on safety, watch-keeping, boat handling, navigation, electronics, mechanics, weather strategy, log-keeping, communications, provisioning.
Program goals include sailing in the Marion to Bermuda race in 2025, competing in other races , and creating a larger group of adult volunteers to assist the young sailors and serve as mentors.
Another major focus is the storytelling portion of the program, to record some of the incredible experiences that have been had. Students are expected to use various media sources to document their adventures.
