Daf Yomemes

"You can't spell memes without emes" ~ Baruch Zev Gilinsky

Siyum meme! Shkoyach to everyone who finished:
- the perek
- the masekhet
- the seder
- the daf yomemes adventure

You've been a wonderful audience, we've been the talmidei chachamemes, good night!

ANNOUNCEMENT AND JOB OFFER

After more than two years of making a daily meme, I will be retiring at the end of Masekhet Chagigah, the conclusion of Seder Moed.

Why am I stopping now?

The simple answer is that I have been exhausted by this project for quite some time. My main motivation for continuing has been fear that I will drop behind on the cycle if I don't have an accountability mechanism such as this one, but that benefit no longer justifies the effort this project is taking.

Additionally, the somewhat dated meme format that I have been using is no longer relevant to modern meme theory, and I'm not sufficiently invested to want to start paying more attention to current meme trends. In fact, the future of memes is not on Facebook with my grandparents and awkward campus rabbi couple accounts, but on Instagram and, increasingly, Tiktok.

As a partner of a Tiktok influencer myself, I cannot in good conscience inflict on the beloved people in my life the suffering of being in a room with somebody while they film tiktoks for hours on end. And more importantly, there's nothing that I can offer to Tiktok that would be more valuable than the revelatory lomdus of nesi doreinu Miriam Anzovin shlit"a. We should all be zoche to live in a world with more of her heilige Torah.

What will happen to the project now?

This is where you come in! I am happy to hand over the administration of this page to anyone who is learning Daf Yomi and prepared to try to make a meme every day. My assumption is that nobody will want to because, believe me, it's terrible, but if ruach hakodesh moves you then just send a message to this page and we will enter talks!

As for me, I can only hope that I will manage to maintain my success in learning the daf on time every day without the external motivation. This is like the moment when my dad took the stablisers off of my bike and I am very scared but also hopeful. With your tefillos and the support of the almighty one, whose word is fire and whose law is wholesome, I hope to celebrate siyum hashas with you all in five years' time.
