NYC has lost a culinary creative like no other. This past Saturday we lost one of the greatest Chefs in the world and one of my closest friends, Jamal James Kent.
Jamal started from humble beginnings and went on to become a Multi-Michelin star chef. He worked side by side with the giants of our industry. & at 70 Pine in FIDI were his first solo projects where he really got to express his full creative potential.
Jamal & I spent our formative years together; formative being a gross understatement. For a couple of unsupervised latch key kids growing up in the city in the 90’s, we coulda done a lot worse. Pride, respect & appreciation would best describe the currency of our friendship. In an ocean of shiesty barracuda’s, Jamal’s generous and kind spirit beamed out like a lighthouse. No matter how stressful life got it always gave me solace knowing he was there.
Jamal & I became fast friends in high school. Those dog years would forever influence the men we grew up to be. We supported each other in our separate restaurant careers, had children at the same time, and shared fatherhood stories together that would crack us up.
He always put his family first. He brought his wife Kelly, son Gavin, and daughter Avery on adventures around the world. Next to every great king is always a great queen. Kelly is as powerful, strong, & loving as they come. She will carry on Jamal’s legacy with grace.
It’s rare to find a kindred spirit that truly recognizes and understands you. Jamal made me feel seen. We saw each other, and that level of kinship and brotherhood can never be replaced.
In his profession, he was a source of culinary creativity that is utterly irreplaceable. He was an accumulation of all the great chefs of the world - poured into one body & soul - that grew up in a bygone era of New York City. I know he is still out there just in a different way. His lighthouse will never go dark. May his innovation & brilliance continue to be carried on by all those that he helped pave a path for.
Rest in Power Jamal!
Your Friend Always,
Kalkin Narvilas, Founder of Cent’Anni
