The 2016 Elections

2016 is a very important election year. The most visible election will be the Presidential contest.

Presidential Election

The President of the United States is the leader of the Executive Branch of the federal government. This means the President sets the agenda for the nation. She/he tries to rally the nation and lawmakers to a certain point of view and plan of action. She/he proposes a budget, signs bills into law, and controls the federal bureaucracy that carries out established law. The President also nominates Supreme Court justices and other key figures.

The presidential election is Tuesday, November 8th.

However, there are other elections taking place on November 8th.

Congress

The President proposes a budget, but Congress decides how much funding each agency or program receives. Congress has two houses – the Senate and the House of Representatives.

US Senator

The members of the Senate are called Senators. Each state has two Senators. The Senate is called the “upper house”. Senators serve six years terms.

Members of House of Representatives

The “lower house” of Congress. Members of Congress serve two year terms. All tax law starts here.

State Legislative Bodies

This is where laws are made that can have a very direct, visible impact on you. Drivers’ licenses, vaccination requirements, sales tax are examples of some of the issues that State Legislators discuss.

All 63 seats in the New York State Senate and all 150 seats in the New York State Assembly are up for election in 2016.

There may be certain local elections (town or city council, judges, etc.).

A single vote can often sway these elections – could it be yours?
