Old time Auto Row in NYC.

June, 1905.

"Automobile Row" with Packard Motors (1904-07) at 1540 Broadway on the right and Studebaker Building (1902-2004) at 1600 Broadway up ahead, which had elevators for cars.

On the left is 130-room Hotel Churchill (1547 Broadway) owned by a former police sergeant with 30 in-house multi-ethnic s*x trade workers, catering to automobile execs.

Hotel Churchill was razed for Gaiety Theatre (1909) renamed Victoria (1943) and Embassy 5 (1978-82). The construction lot before it was for Astor Theatre (1906).

Early Times Square (1904) had 136 brothels with weekend line ups. In 1896, a new Blue law was passed to forbid Sunday alcohol sales outside of hotels with 10+ beds. So NYC saloons added 10,000 beds, growing the local s*x trade.

Times Square renamed Longacre Square (1872-1904), orignally named for London's Carriage District.

Longacre Square was also a dimly lit Red Light District, also known as Thieves Lair, rife with crooks and pickpockets.

Until Oscar Hammerstein's Olympia (1895-1935) created current Theatre District, no theatre operator dared to build north of 42nd St into smelly poorly-lit Carriage District, rife with crime.

Hammerstein saw 42nd St street cars from Cornelius Vanderbilt's Grand Central Depot (1871) arriving at his Metropole Hotel (1876-1910) at Broadway/7th Ave, first city hotel with running water in every room.

Hammerstein envisioned 42nd St becoming a mass transit hub, before the 1904 subway and Port Authority Bus Terminal (1950) delivered millions of passengers here.

42nd Street was once City limits, why locomotives were banned south of 42nd St in 1854. That's why Grand Central Terminal (1913) is on the north side of 42nd St.

It was still pretty rural here in the 1853-54 World's Fair at current Bryant Park. Cows still roamed by Grand Central Depot (1871). Much of Times Square was Astor family farm land.

Our friend swung by The Winter Show] and picked out some swoon worthy jewels for our favorite lensman Andrew Werner] to photograph. Read all about the pieces and see the beautiful imagery at the link in bio.

📸 Egyptian Revival necklace made around 1870 spotted

According to the experts at the esteemed establishment the design takes inspiration from “Egyptian ‘wesekh’ style necklaces, a term meaning ‘broad one.’” The silhouette of the jewel is the same as ancient floral collars. Interestingly, the piece was retailed by A La Vieille Russie around 1950, proving yet again that the jewelry world pioneered the idea of a circular economy.

Subway Car to Yankee Stadium on Opening Day
Hop on a piece of transit history on your way to the game.

Baseball is back in the Bronx, and you can arrive in style this year with the return of the Metropolitan Transit Authority's vintage subway cars.

On Wednesday, the MTA announced that it would be bringing its century-old IRT "Lo-V" cars back into service to ferry passengers to Yankee Stadium for the baseball team's home opener. The game was initially scheduled for Thursday but was postponed to Friday due to inclement weather.

The Lo-V cars, which Trains Magazine notes first came into service in 1917 and are now used only for special occasions, haven't been run since the 2019 New York Yankees home opener due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They include old-school features like rattan seating and ceiling fans.

To catch the special vintage car, you can board at 11 am on the uptown 4 train platform at the Grand Central-42nd Street station. The train will run directly to the 161st Street-Yankee Stadium station with no intermediate stops, getting spectators there in about 25 minutes.

The MTA will also bring back its special "Yankee Clipper" Metro-North service on game days to make it easier to attend by mass transit.
