Agile Learning Center

Education Evolved We start with trust -- with each student able to make their own decisions and pursue their own passions.

This creates the opportunity to flourish to their full potential inside a supportive, respectful and loving culture. We believe that humans are natural learners. When children have the opportunity to follow their passions, they engage deeply, learning quickly and thoroughly — sometimes covering years of traditional curriculum content in days or weeks at a time. We use practical and concrete tools

Today, while most of the school was out on an ice skating field trip, fiber arts happened online because we’re still offering hybrid virtual/in-person learning! Why? Not only does relieve feelings of FOMO for sick community members (without sharing germs!), it feels like a obvious extension of our founding philosophy “learning is natural and happening all the time!” We’ve always offered “offsite” learning, and we’re excited about another way to support learners, on-site and off!

Anyone for boba tea? In our weekly, student-led art class, we all draw something special, step-by-step, together (and then we die from cuteness!)

How do they learn math? In a shame-free, curiosity-led environment! Ryan’s been offering math for a decade and all kinds of kids learn all kinds of math skills at ALC because math isn’t inherently terrible - prioritizing tests and grades is!

Oh look! It's Jessie Dernsco 😍

One of the most magical parts of homeschooling/unschooling is that learning can take any form-- it’s natural and happening all the time. ✨

Many of us grew up in traditional schools and have been socialized to believe a narrow definition of learning and success. Deschooling isn’t just a period of time away from the influences of formal schooling systems. It is the intentional process of peeling back the layers of our socialization, so we can sink more deeply into truths about education and what it means to be in relationship with young people, ultimately giving us the opportunity to shift our practices towards passion-driven living and learning.

Join our supportive + nurturing community to begin or continue this work!

08/23/2021

New webpage alert! It's still too pandemic-y for us to get back to hosting gatherings and workshops in person, but we keep adapting. The Alcove page will get updated monthly with public events and similar offerings. Next update coming September 13th. Stay tuned! ?!..
IG video shows upcoming event tiles on the new webpage. The events don't have details yet, but they include a "coffee chat," a discussion of Mia Birdsong's book "How We Show Up," and perks like support calls through a new Patreon page. Abby executively added a picture of 2 pigeons and is curious to hear if the kids are pleased and amused or demand she replace the birds with Pizza Rat. We'll find out when school resumes soon!

☀️🌙🌟LEARNING IS NATURAL AND HAPPENING ALL THE TIME🌟🌙☀️
Humans are incredible curious apes and we use our meat and electricity to constantly make meaning. Children have less context and therefore more meaning to make than adults - they cannot rest on what they think they know to be true in the same way we do - and sometimes we forget that learning how to navigate the deli counter, or a hard conversation with a beloved person, or the labyrinths of bureaucracy are all also valid and important learning. Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. Children are not empty vessels to be filled with knowledge. They’re co-creating this world as they learn to move through it.
