Meeting of Consul General with Malik Sohail Hussain, Chairman Coordination/ Convener-Fair, Exhibition & Event Management, FPCCI

Consul General, Mr. Aamer Ahmed Atozai met with Mr. Malik Sohail Hussain, Chairman Coordination / Convener-Fair, Exhibition & Event Management, Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI). Mr. Sohail is also Secretary General, U.S Pakistan International Chamber of Commerce. He is currently visiting the US and meeting with different stakeholders to finalize arrangements for an FPCCI delegation scheduled to visit the US in September/October 2024. Mr. Adnan Mahmood Awan, the Trade & Investment Counsellor, New York was also present during the meeting.

The visitor apprised the Consul General that the purpose of the planned delegation is to promote exports from Pakistan and foster stronger economic ties between Pakistan and the US. He further informed that the delegation will be led by the President FPCCI and will consist of businessmen from textile, leather, IT, energy, mines and minerals and Agriculture sectors. He requested the support of the Consulate for arranging meetings of the delegation with concerned stakeholders including chambers of commerce, associations and government officials. He also shared that an exhibition to promote exports of gems and jewelry is being organized in September 2024 under the auspices of the Trade & Development Authority of Pakistan. He requested the support of the Consulate in identifying appropriate buyers from the US market to participate in the exhibition.

The Consul General appreciated the efforts of the FPCCI and assured him to extend all possible support from the Consulate to the FPCCI delegation. He also shared the efforts of the Consulate for organizing delegations to the Food Ag 2024 and Texpo 2024 to be held in Karachi and lessons learned during the process. He highlighted the importance of planning the delegations in advance and coordinating with stakeholders early for better outcomes. It was agreed that the Consulate and the FPCCI will keep a close liaison for promoting exports from Pakistan.

Consul General attends Namaz-e-Janazah of a Pakistani murdered in a robbery in New York

The Consulate General of Pakistan in New York is deeply saddened by the tragic death of a member of our Pakistani community, Naveed Afzal, a 52-year-old resident of Faisalabad, Pakistan, who was shot dead in a robbery in Brooklyn, New York. Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai participated in the Namaz-e-Janazah (funeral prayer) of the deceased.

The Namaz-e-Janazah witnessed a large turnout, of Pakistani community members coming together to pay their respects and offer their condolences to the bereaved family. The Consulate General extends its heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai expressed his grief over the incident and assured the family of the Consulate's full support. He stated, "The Consulate General stands with the family and the Pakistani community in this moment of sorrow. We are committed to providing all necessary assistance and support."

The Consulate General is in close contact with local law enforcement agencies and will continue to monitor the progress of the investigation. We hope that the culprits responsible for this heinous crime will be apprehended and brought to justice swiftly.

Meeting of Consul General and Trade & Investment Counsellor with Thomas J. Grech, President, Queens Chamber of Commerce

Consul General, Mr. Aamer Ahmed Atozai welcomed Mr. Thomas J. Grech, the President of Queens Chamber of Commerce to discuss the initiatives taken by Government of Pakistan to enhance the bilateral trade between Pakistan and the US. The Trade & Investment Counsellor, Mr. Adnan Mahmood Awan briefed the visitors about the sectors where exports from Pakistan could be enhanced. He also outlined the incentives provided by the Government for investors in various sectors. The Consul General invited the President to visit the upcoming Food Ag 2024 and Texpo 2024 to be held in Karachi.

The President of Queens Chamber expressed keen interest in Textile, leather, surgical and IT sectors. He briefed the meeting about various initiatives undertaken by the Chamber. He also assured to disseminate the information regarding the upcoming trade shows to the members of Queens Chamber. He also offered to host Pakistani tech startups at the tech incubation centers run by the Chamber.

At the end of the meeting, both sides expressed their resolve to continue and further expand collaboration between the Consulate and the Chamber to promote trade between Queens and Pakistan.

Joint Event on Combating Islamophobia by the Consulate Generals of Pakistan, Türkiye, and Indonesia in New York

The Consulate Generals of Pakistan, Türkiye, and Indonesia in New York co-hosted a significant event on combatting Islamophobia. In their opening statements, the Consul Generals emphasized their governments' collective commitment to combatting Islamophobia, while also advocating for peace, tolerance, and inter-religious dialogue.

In his remarks, Consul General of Pakistan, Aamer Ahmad Atozai, emphasized Islam's core principles of moderation, pluralism, compassion and tolerance. He highlighted the misrepresentation of Islam by a minority of extremists and the concerning surge of Islamophobia since 9/11, encompassing hate speech, violence, and institutional discrimination against Muslims. He also underscored Pakistan's active role, alongside Türkiye and Indonesia, in the recent adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution on "Measures to combat Islamophobia," which includes a call for the appointment of a United Nations Special Envoy on combatting Islamophobia.

The Consul General emphasized Israel's genocidal actions in Gaza as a stark illustration of global Islamophobia and shed light on prevalent Islamophobic incidents worldwide, including hate speech, targeted attacks, and discrimination against Muslims. He further brought into focus the systematic destruction of religious sites in India and other Islamophobic actions within the country. He also emphasized the significant military presence of Indian occupation forces in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as well as India's discriminatory policies aimed at altering the region's demographic composition from a Muslim majority to a Hindu majority through demographic engineering.

A panel discussion followed, featuring distinguished speakers who explored various dimensions of Islamophobia. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Enes Bayrakli from Türkiye discussed the nature and roots of Islamophobia and Muslim-opposed racism. Dr. Imam Shams Ali from Indonesia examined the factors contributing to Islamophobia and proposed strategies towards combating it. Mr. Raza Ahmad Rumi from Pakistan focused on the dangerous manifestations of Islamophobia in today's world, particularly in India and the urgent need for effective measures to counteract them.

The event emphasized the crucial role of international cooperation and community engagement in tackling Islamophobia. Consulate Generals reiterated their governments’ dedication to promoting mutual respect and understanding among diverse communities, reaffirming their commitment to ongoing collaborative endeavors in this critical endeavor.

Consulate General of Pakistan New York holds Consular Camp in Connecticut

The Consulate General of Pakistan New York held a Consular Camp on Saturday, 1st June 2024 to provide on-spot Consular Services to Pakistani community residing in the State of Connecticut and surrounding areas. The Consular Camp was arranged at the request Pakistani community members and local community organization, Pakistani American Association of Connecticut (PAACT).

The Consular Camp was held from 1000-1500 hours. A large number of applicants visited the camp to avail notarization & attestation services and get information about online visa, Pakistani passport renewal and NICOP.

The organizers as well as the Pakistani community thanked the consular team and appreciated the efforts of the Consulate to provide consular services at their doorstep.

Return of 133 Stolen Artifacts to Pakistan

A ceremony was held at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office on 21 May 2024, marking the return of 133 pieces of stolen Pakistani antiquities dating back to the Gandharan period (3500-2600 BCE).

An agreement was signed on the occasion by Consul General of Pakistan in New York, Aamer Ahmed Atozai and Manhattan District Attorney’s Office Chief of Antiquities Trafficking Unit, Colonel Matthew Bogdanos. Assistant Special Agent in charge Christopher Lau of Homeland Security Investigations was also present. Some of the recovered antiquities were also displayed during the ceremony.

The Consul General expressed his sincere sense of gratitude to the Office of the Manhattan District Attorney, and the Department of Homeland Security for their efforts in retrieving stolen cultural treasure of Pakistan. He emphasized that the return of these artifacts not only restores a part of Pakistan's cultural heritage but also strengthens the bond between both nations in the fight against cultural property crimes.

The returned items include notable pieces such as a Gandharan statue depicting a Maitreya, Mehrgarh Dolls, an ancient gold coin and some of the earliest human-crafted figurines. These artifacts were recovered through extensive investigations into an international trafficking network which smuggled looted antiquities into markets in the USA, Europe, and Asia.

The Consulate General of Pakistan in New York acknowledges the efforts of all those involved in the recovery and return of these cultural treasures. This event stands as a testament to the power of international collaboration in preserving cultural heritage.

During his visit, he interacted and delivered a talk to the Grade 7th & 8th students on the significance of Pakistan, the art of diplomacy, and the responsibilities inherent in a career diplomat.

Upon his arrival, the Consul General was warmly welcomed by Mr. Evan Hageman, Head of the school, setting the stage for an enriching exchange of ideas and insights.

In his address, the Consul General painted a vivid picture of Pakistan as a nation imbued with charm, significance, and progressiveness within the South Asian region. He underscored Pakistan's natural marvels, including the majestic K2, the towering Tirich Mir, and the illustrious Hindukush, Karakoram, and Himalayan mountain ranges.
