US Union Organizing, and Unions’ Election Win Rate, Is Surging
Unions are filing petitions to hold elections and winning them at rates not seen in decades, according to data released by the National Labor Relations Board on Wednesday, likely a reflection of the agency's adoption of policies favored by unions during the Biden administration.

President Middleton Speaks Out On Black Women's Equal Pay Day
Black Women's Equal Pay Day is July 9 — the day that Black women working full-time have to work until in 2024 to earn what white, non-Hispanic men working full-time earned in 2023.
President Gloria Middleton was interviewed by PowHer NY to address changing this reality by fighting for stronger laws and substantial investment in expanding pay transparency laws, making child care accessible to all, ensuring fair pay for care workers, expanding paid leave, and bringing women into higher paying roles.

It would take until today, July 9, for a black woman to earn the same amount a white man earned in 2023. It's time we close the wage gap.

Juneteenth allows us to remember how far black people have progressed, and is a reminder of the strength we have within us.
In early May, as the National Audubon Society hosted its 21st annual Women in Conservation event at a swanky restaurant in Manhattan, CEO Elizabeth Gray handed out awards named after writer and conservationist Rachel Carson to recognize the next generation of women environmental leaders and activists.
But outside the event, a couple dozen of Audubon’s women staffers had gathered for a protest related to their own environmental careers. Equipped with megaphones and wearing red union t-shirts, they held up hand-drawn signs that said things like, “CEO Gray is not an ally to women in conservation (ask her about parental leave).” Others opted for bird puns: “Owl workers deserve a fair contract.”
Their union — called Bird Union-CWA, part of the Communications Workers of America — has been in contract negotiations with Audubon for over two years. Workers voted to unionize in September 2021 following a series of disastrous events. In 2020, during the early days of the pandemic, the national conservation organization laid off over 100 workers. Later that year, an investigation by Politico described a toxic workplace culture for women and people of color and the resignation of two diversity, equity and inclusion staff members.

Angry birders: The union representing Audubon Society workers is pushing for equal pay for women As part of ongoing contract negotiations, the Bird Union (yes, that’s its real name) is calling for raises, pay parity and more parental leave.

On Sunday, June 9, 2024, CWA Local 1180 members attended the National Puerto Rican Day Parade. This year's parade theme theme was Boricua de Corazón, which captures the collective sentiment that being Puerto Rican is central to our identity and lives in our hearts no matter where we find ourselves in the world.

Gov. Hochul Halts Congestion Pricing in a Stunning 11th-Hour Shift
Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York announced on Wednesday that she was shelving the long-awaited tolling plan known as congestion pricing, just weeks before it was to go into effect.
“After careful consideration I have come to the difficult decision that implementing the planned congestion pricing system risks too many unintended consequences,” Ms. Hochul said, adding: “I have directed the M.T.A. to indefinitely pause the program.”

Local 1180's Bird Union Brings Fight for Fair Pay to Women in Conservation Fundraiser
On May 9, the National Audubon Society hosted a luncheon in New York City to celebrate the achievements of women in the conservation movement. But members of the Bird Union (CWA Local 1180) gathered outside to highlight the organization’s systemic unequal pay for women and BIPOC employees, which makes it difficult for the next generation of women in conservation to build a successful and impactful career.
Union members have been negotiating with Audubon for more than two years without reaching an agreement for a fair first contract. In December, Audubon announced merit-based, discretionary annual raises for staff but withheld raises for union members.
Members of the Bird Union-CWA Local 1180 delivered a new report to Audubon leadership exposing systemic pay disparities. In one job category, white men on average make 13% more than white women and 16% more than BIPOC women. https://cwa-union.org/AudubonPayInequity
To achieve equitable wages and a more sustainable workforce, union members are calling on Audubon to abandon its arbitrary and opaque system of discretionary pay increases ostensibly based on merit and instead commit to regular and equitable cost-of-living increases.
