Planning for Accessibility: Proximity is More Important than Mobility 05/28/2024

An article by Planetizen highlights a fundamental shift in transportation planning from mobility to accessibility, redefining how transportation issues are approached. The focus is now on accessing services and activities rather than maximizing speed and distance.

Fitwel strategies are aligned with this shift by supporting alternatives to car dependent mobility and providing standards that push asset owners to create more healthy and resource-dense built environments where residents live, work, and play. This accessibility-based planning approach aims to create complete, affordable, livable, healthy, and sustainable communities while minimizing environmental impacts, emphasizing the role of transportation agencies in supporting slower but more efficient modes.
