Street vendors across New York City share the same dream-upward economic mobility & running their own small business. But that dream has become a nightmare. New York City’s governance of street vending is broken, and it is time to fix it.

Council Members Sanchez, Farias, De La Rosa, Krishnan, and the Public Advocate introduced the package of crucial bills that aim to reform the city’s current street vending system, letting vendors provide the services New Yorkers want - in a regulated, orderly system - and giving these small businesses a real chance to build wealth in their neighborhoods.

We’re calling on to pass the Street Vendor Reform Package — to invest in services and education for street vendors, rather than only punitive enforcement that destabilizes working families and pushes them into debt.

“I have to sell 3,000 bottles of water to be able to pay for that ticket. I walk up and down on 125th Street, from 125th to Marcus Garvey, and I may sell about five to 10 bottles of water each time I walk the five to six blocks. You could imagine how many times I would have to walk that route to pay for that ticket, and then pay rent and then buy something to eat.”

Former DOE teacher Edgar Telesford was hit with a $1,000 summons for selling water & pre-packaged chips without a license on 125th Street in Harlem

This has to stop. must pass

Rest in Peace to Mama Jo and our deepest condolences to her family. An iconic mother of street food, Joanna Despas, aka Mama Jo, served up breakfast on 47th Street & Park Ave for over 35 years at ‘Mama Jo’s Breakfast Cart’ after migrating to NYC from Greece. She was know citywide for her kind smile, her love for her customers — both those who visited from across the world and the local construction workers who built up the city around her.

Mama Jo was an SVP as a member for over a decade and won the 2018 Vendy Award for the best breakfast cart. She will be sorely missed by the SVP community and by the tens of thousands of lives she made better. May her memory be a blessing

Thank you to Team for collaborating on outreach to street vendors on Burnside Ave!

It is so important for educational materials & outreach to be available to street vendor small businesses, to help bring vendors into compliance, rather than just enforcement. We are glad to guide vendors with our compliance kits in English, Spanish, French and Wolof to support vendors in the corridor and thank for her support!

Street vending enforcement is regulated by DSNY police in the sidewalks, Parks police in parks property, and NYPD anywhere.

A new analysis by shows that summonses issued in and along city parks for unpermitted vending have increased year over year in the past 3 years. The number of summonses issued for those infractions is up 30% in 2023 compared to 2019.

“This will keep happening over and over again,” unless the City Council moves forward with a vendor reform package. When will the city be ready to have that difficult conversation and move things forward” said Mohamed Attia, managing director of SVP

On the afternoon of Sunday, June 2nd, NYC Parks Enforcement Patrol and the NYPD aggressively targeted a street vendor family in Battery Park. At this time, the family asks for privacy as they recover from the trauma of the day’s events. The Street Vendor Project is supporting the street vendor family and connecting them to the appropriate legal resources. All funds raised go directly to the street vendor family. Thank you to everyone who has been speaking out in support.

The Street Vendor Project In Urban Justice Center

Founded in 2001, Street Vendor Project is the one and only organization in the nation to serve street vendors in NYC. Street vendor community is historically under-served and faces many problems. The resources and assistance provided to them as the smallest business owners is limited. Our mission is to promote the social and economic justice of this marginalized population and raise the public awareness about vendors and their contributions to our city. We are dedicated to reach out to all vendors; deliver qualified legal, financial and business development service by providing direct legal representation, pushing through legislative change and organizing educational training.
