Our first Hunter Jazz Presents / New Topologies event of the semester is tomorrow night!
Tremendously psyched to have the brilliant, incisive and very insightful pianist Vedrana Subotic with us as a guest artist at Hunter College this Monday and Tuesday! On Monday, March 4th at 8pm, Vedrana will play a solo program featuring the Liszt B minor Sonata and his “Dante” Sonata, along with Bosnian and Romani folk songs arranged for Vedrana by Christopher O'Riley and others. And on Tuesday, March 5th at 2:30pm, Vedrana will share her wisdom and expertise in a masterclass with our piano majors. Both events will transpire in Lang Recital Hall at Hunter.
The Hunter College Choir welcomes new members for Fall 2023! Auditions take place at the first class on August 28th in Appel Hall. Undergraduates, Graduate Students, Alumni and Community Members make this choir one of the most dynamic in New York City. This fall we will perform works by Fauré and Mozart alongside Margaret Bonds' cantata "The Ballad of the Brown King."
Prof. Keberle just announced a new album featuring his band from Brazil that is now available for pre-order. This group, Collectiv do Brasil, will be giving a workshop at Hunter College this Fall! 🔥

We are very excited to share that Elizabeth Zotto (BMus 22') was recently accepted to NYU Steinhardt Master's program in Classical Voice! She will be starting her studies there this upcoming Fall. Full article on our website, music.hunter.cuny.edu/news/.
The month of November is the month of thanks and what more can we be thankful for than finally graduating!
Our students put in a lot of work and dedication to obtaining their degrees. One of the final steps to graduating is putting on a graduation recital.

Join us next week Thursday, November 18th at 4PM where BA/MA student, Samuel Kim, will walk us through his findings from a study on four renditions of “The House of the Rising Sun.” We will also be holding a Q&A after his lecture.
These renditions will be from Georgia Turner, Joan Baez, Nina Simone, and The Animals. The study examined the intentional and unintentional use of specific timbres to convey nuanced meaning and emotion in each rendition. A methodology for analyzing timbre using technologies such as spectrograms and spectrum plots will also be discussed.

Congrats to Alumnus Mariel Mayz (M.A. '18) for receiving an artist grant from the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center - JACCC. From this grant, she was able to create a video realization for her piece "frames/fragments" which was featured in their virtual exhibition called “The Kintsugi Spirit," Which is available for the month of October.

The Hunter College Choir and Chamber Singers are back in-person this fall to sing on themes of light and hope for our times!
Starting on August 26, we have been meeting in the newly renovated Appel Hall, which is equipped with windows and ventilation systems. We will sing with masks on and with social distancing, and unite in voice and spirit.
Our program will feature the epically energizing and inspiring Haydn “Lord Nelson Mass”, a work by Brazilian composer José Maurízio Nuñez Garcia, Gabrieli motets for double choir, and a contemporary piece. There will be many solo opportunities for our student singers. Come join us!
