CDI x REACH (Reimagining Entrepreneurship in the Arts, Culture and Humanities) took place earlier this month in Milan, Italy. Eight CDI graduates and alums participated in a one-week visual arts and design, creative and cultural exchange program.

Participants learned about local culture and artist practices, collaborated with French, Italian and Basque visual and performing artists, met industry professionals for mentorship, and engaged in workshops on visual arts, design and fabrication.

The program is a continuation of a 27-month global CDI collaboration, in part funded by the EU/Erasmus+ programs where participating partners share a mission to develop a creative and entrepreneurial synergy between young emerging professionals on an international level.

CDI’s SPARK! Senior Showcase took place last month at the iconic at the . This annual showcase highlights a group of CDI graduating seniors, hand-selected to perform their artistry to a room full of leading industry professionals, faculty, families and friends!

The Clive Davis Institute x Atlantic Records Songwriting Camp 2024 ran from May 20 to May 23 in the Atlantic Studios and WCM songwriting rooms at the Warner Music Group headquarters in New York City.

The camp was spearheaded by CDI alum (’18) and Atlantic Records executive, (Manager, A&R Operations) and included collaborative writing sessions by CDI alumni and students as well as daily guest lectures, discussions, and Q&As with WMG executives!

Students took the stage earlier this month for the final performance of CDI’s “The Art of the MC” course, taught by legendary MC Black Thought. Congratulations to all of the student performers!

Tonight’s the night! We’ll see you at Joe’s Pub for our Senior Showcase.

The Clive Davis Institute welcomed legendary emcee, writer and activist Chuck D this month for a conversation with his college classmate, Public Enemy creative partner, former CEO of Def Jam Recordings, and CDI instructor Bill Stephney to discuss the expansive history of hip-hop and it’s impact on contemporary popular culture.

Both as a solo artist and as the leader of the groundbreaking hip-hop group Public Enemy, Chuck D helped pave the way for political, social and culturally conscious hip-hop.

We are very excited to announce two new full-time faculty hires - and one new visiting full-time faculty hire - here at the Clive Davis Institute! All three will start in the 2023/2024 academic year.

Erin Tonkon and Bobby Wooten III will be joining CDI as full-time Assistant Arts professors in the production area. Naima Cochrane will join us as a visiting full-time Assistant Arts professor in the business & technology area for the 2023/2024 academic year!

Erin Tonkon - a producer, engineer, and mixer (and alumnus of CDI) - has worked with the likes of David Bowie and Esperanza Spalding. Bobby Wooten - a Grammy-nominated composer, producer and instrumentalist - has worked with the likes of David Byrne, Jennifer Lopez, and Mac Miller. And Naima Cochrane - a marketer and storyteller - has worked with the likes of Beyonce, John Legend, and Tyler The Creator.

Congratulations to Nick Sansano on being appointed the next Chair of NYU-Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music!

The Institute is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and we will continue to be in outstanding hands with Nick at the helm, after Jason King completes his term at the end of the spring semester.

Nick joined the full-time faculty in 2004, and is currently the Institute’s Associate Chair and the Director of Production Curriculum. Nick began his professional career at Greene Street Recording in NYC, recording and mixing for the likes of Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Sonic Youth, and Run DMC.

Congratulations to Dan Charnas on winning the PEN America Award for Biography, for his acclaimed book "Dilla Time: The Life and Afterlife of J Dilla, the Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm"!

Announcing the 2023 PEN America Literary Awards Winners PEN America is thrilled to announce the 2023 Literary Awards winners. The winners were announced at the ceremony on March 2, 2023.

1 + 1 = 3 is the collaborative multimedia performance series between NYU-Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music IMA, Tisch, NYU and ITP - NYU - and it’s back. Join CDI Students Emily Patt, Billy Wright-Mullings, Naomi Yanos, and Zane Mattingly as they provide the musical performances and ITP students provide the visuals. Our next performance is the Garage at 370 Jay Street this Monday, February 27th at 6:30 pm ET - it is free and open to the public.

Thank you to Lee Smith and Kali Abdullah of Spotify for hosting us yesterday at Spotify headquarters in New York for a special BLK conversation event for Black History Month and an exclusive Meet and Greet with executives. Over a catered lunch, our students learned a lot about Spotify and its ongoing DEI efforts - and got a chance to hear from executives and leaders of color about the work they do at the company.

Blake Slatkin won for Record of the Year for “About Damn Time” by Lizzo and contributed to "Unholy" by Sam & Kim Petras (winner: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance)

Andrew Watt contributed to "Degradation Rules" by Ozzy Osbourne (winner: Best Metal Performance) and Patient Number 9 (winner: Best Rock Album)

Nominated members of our community, or those who contributed to nominated projects include Jim Anderson, Ulrike Schwarz, Binta Brown, Raul Cubina, Jasper Harris, Q-Tip, Alan Silverman, Questlove, Cecile Tournesac, Emily Warren.

Black Thought and Questlove also performed as part of the stellar "50th anniversary of Hip Hop" tribute and last year's Artist in Residence Jack Antonoff won for Producer of the Year.

And this year also marked the return of the in-person Clive Davis' Pre-Grammy Gala held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel!

Clive Davis Institute student Sumaya Bouhbal was recently featured in Vogue for her climate and anti-racist activism - the features follow how she founded her organization, the Young Lordes Collective, and the mutual aid that they distribute in low-income neighborhoods of color.

How Two Young Climate Activists Are Tackling Water and Food Insecurity Across North America In the Six Nations and Washington Heights, Makaśa Looking Horse and Sumaya Bouhbal are both working to spotlight the link between the climate crisis and the ongoing threats to water and food security in today’s America.
