Momentum Grows for Disaggregated Asian American Health Data 04/05/2024

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall of 2020, a National Academies of Science, Engineering, Medicine consensus report was published that offered a framework for equitable vaccine distribution -- "but Asian Americans were not on it," Dr. Stella Yi noted. In conversation with Dr. Yi and other Asian American health researchers, a new article from JAMA News discusses why disaggregating AsAm health data is long overdue. Read it here:

Momentum Grows for Disaggregated Asian American Health Data This Medical News article discusses how aggregated data obscure large health disparities among the 24 million Asian American people in the US.

Turning the Health Equity Lens to Diversity in Asian American Health Profiles | Annual Reviews 03/22/2024

A recently invited article published in the Annual Review of Public Health by Lan Ðoàn, Michelle Chau, Naheed Ahmed, Jiepin Cao, Celine Chan, and Stella Yi critically reviews Asian American health research over the past two decades. The authors found that much of the literature emphasized underutilization of health care services; low knowledge and awareness among Asian Americans about risk factors, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; inadequate efforts to improve language access, provider-patient communication, and trust; and the critical roles of community- and faith-based organizations and leaders in health promotion initiatives. The authors recommend investing significantly in community-engaged research infrastructure to increase representation, funding, and research innovation for Asian American communities.

Read the full text of this important review at:

Turning the Health Equity Lens to Diversity in Asian American Health Profiles | Annual Reviews The monolithic misrepresentation of Asian American (AsAm) populations has maintained assumptions that AsAm people are not burdened by health disparities and social and economic inequities. However, the story is more nuanced. We critically review AsAm health research to present knowledge of AsAm heal...
