“Service to Others” encapsulates how Dr. John Scudder and his wife Harriet approached their community in 1836 when they first arrived in India. Following them, the Scudder family embarked upon pioneering medical mission work, including the founding of CMC Vellore by Dr. Ida S. Scudder. Today, the family keeps their rich history alive through The Scudder Association Foundation and their continued partnership with CMC.
Susan Swanson, a trained historian, is the great-granddaughter of Dr. Silas Scudder, founder of Scudder Memorial Hospital in Ranipet, India. She currently serves on the Board of the Scudder Association Foundation as Chair of Indian Grants. Susan also previously served on the Vellore CMC Foundation Board in the mid-1980s.
After several years as a consultant radiation oncologist in the department started by Dr. Ida B. Scudder at Vellore, Dr. Reena George (Batch '85) trained in palliative medicine at Oxford with Dr. Robert Twycross. Returning to Vellore, she started the Palliative Care Unit in CMC in 2004, serving there until 2019. She also served as the first editor of the online Indian Journal of Palliative Care. Reena currently heads the Department of Continuing Medical Education and the CMC Archives. Her book, One Step at a Time (Roli Press, 2018) traces the vocational calls, choices, and struggles that led to the birth of the Christian Medical College Vellore.

Happy International Women's Day!
120+ years ago, Dr. Ida S. Scudder built an institution for women by women. Her vision was to provide compassionate, quality care for all women regardless of religion or social standing. Dr. Ida has since inspired countless women who have worked tirelessly for CMC and have contributed greatly to science and healthcare, not only for women but for everyone in India and globally.

Global mission is born out of the mission work we each conduct in our local communities. Consequently, it is local mission work that serves as the best preparer for and an indicator of success for mission work performed overseas. But how do we prioritize between the two? Join us in an interactive discussion intended to create a deeper understanding of the interdependence between local and global mission and how best to balance your resources to address institutional priorities.
The specific topics to be explored, as well as the guest faith institutions who will lead each of these discussions, are as follows:
“Living Lovingly and Justly as Servants of Christ by Healing the Sick.” - The United Methodist Church
“Keys to Successful Cross-Cultural Partnerships Between the U.S. and Internationally Based Faith Communities.” - The Spectrum Church
“Engaging in Meaningful, Curative, Preventive, and Educational Ministries at Home and Around the World.”- International Ministries (American Baptist Foreign Mission Society)
“Best Practices for the Sustainability of Community-based Medical Outreach Programs.” - Christian Medical College, Vellore
“Proclaiming the Freedom, Healing and Hope Found in Jesus at Times of Natural Disasters.”- Seventh-day Adventist Church

Dr. Ida Scudder started her work in Vellore with a focus on serving women and children. She soon recognised that the poor couldn't afford to come to the hospital, and the only way she could help them was by going to their doorstep to deliver the care that they so desperately needed. She drove to the surrounding villages on ‘Road-side Clinics’ and treated her patients under the trees.
One hundred and twenty-two years later, CMC continues to reach out to and partner with local communities around Vellore and Ranipet Districts. From tribal villages in Jawadhi hills to the urban slum communities of Vellore City, CMC’s community health teams work on a locally relevant health and development needs.
In Dr. Ida’s honour, CMC Vellore and the US-based Vellore CMC Foundation have established the 𝐃𝐫. 𝐈𝐝𝐚 𝐒. 𝐒𝐜𝐮𝐝𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐇𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. This year, the 11th Dr. Ida S. Their pioneering community-based health care has influenced policy nationally and internationally, helping to tackle high infant mortality and reproductive health in rural areas. Their commitment and dedication to idealism, social service and scientific research make them inspiring role models.
