ANNUAL ESSAY CONTEST
GRADES 4 - 6

Scandinavian East Coast Museum
440 Ovington Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11209

Annual Essay Contest 2024

Dear All,

The Scandinavian East Coast Museum, has been sponsoring an Annual Essay Contest for about 2 decades. Students from 4th – 6th grades are invited to participate. Our topic syncs with that of the upcoming Norwegian Day Parade’s theme. This year it is Celebrating 70 Years of the Norwegian Day Parade.

The Norwegians have had a presence in New York since it was under Dutch rule and known as New Amsterdam. Some historic figures hailing from Norway during our colonial times were: The Bergen family who have been here for generations, starting with Hans Hansen Bergn who was the first Norwegian farmer to be granted land from the Dutch West India Company and Dirck the Norseman who settled in Greenpoint.

Norwegians were instrumental in the development of New York’s maritime history, which was the main factor in our city’s growth. Perhaps, you would like to explore this.

They were also essential in the building trades. In fact, clapboard architecture was brought to this country by them, as well as the construction of row houses. They even had an Engineer’s Society in Bay Ridge.

An important philosophy they brought to this country was that we need to assist others, that there is a social contract between human beings. Some ways this is evidenced to this day is in the social institutions they created: Norwegian Deaconess Hospital (later Lutheran Medical Center and now NYU), the Norwegian Christian Home (for seniors) and Scandinavia House.

Choose a person, organization/institution or trade that exemplifies or is an example of Norwegian historical contributions to our city. Write about why this person/these people, this organization/institution or trade was or is important.

There will be 2 winners selected. Prizes include: Viking Memorabilia, publication of essays in this year’s Norwegian Day Parade Journal and the opportunity to read your essay at Viking Fest 2024. Please send essays of no more than 3 pages, typed or handwritten by March 31st to:
