Will Holograms drive 6G’s performance leap?
I know what you might be thinking, Holograms? Just trying to catch your attention, in reality this month’s article presents an overview of what academia is calling Holographic MIMO (HMIMO), a very fertile research space that has gathered significant interest the last couple of years. As you read this July’s contribution to CTN, you will learn about the evolution of Massive MIMO towards extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO), the use of different types of reflective type surfaces to increase performance and the use of metasurfaces to potentially realize antenna architectures that can deliver the theoretical performance of XL-MIMO. So why the name Holographic MIMO? Continue to read to find out the answer. As 6G starts to become more of an industry reality rather than an academic exercise, the industry finds itself searching for the next great technology that can provide a leap in performance. HMIMO systems could be part of the answer as long as it can be implemented and deployed cost-effectively. We hope this article can provide a window into what the future of communications could look like.
