GLACIAL DECOY
My Payána, you bounced in with Cecily and I realized for the first time, since I met you in 2012, that you are grown now. No longer a freshie, or a young lady, but a woman. A beautiful dancer-woman who knows precisely when to step down on the gas pedal, when to slam on the brake and when to coast. You are perfectly seamless.
I remember how I always rolled my fists to prompt you to speed up when you were teaching Pilates to Dare. Now you’ve taught me that “Jenn speed” is a wonder, where you suspend me in time, and I forget all my worries. I’m floating in meditation through your dance lens.
In your duet with Cecily I wonder if at the pearly gates of post modern dance heaven, you two would be the angels… greeting all those who enter with a playful and joyful flow that makes you look like you’re dancing on clouds. If there were a sound score to this work, I’d imagine it be people giggling sweetly with one another.
While perfectly in sync with Cecily, you are so individually YOU!
I was so delighted that once you entered, you stayed on stage to nearly the very end. You remind me why dance is my favorite of all art forms. It moves us from the soul. I’m dancing in my seat right along with you.
IN THE FALL
I bet you’re that dancer who everyone loves being paired up with. You’re the “duet queen” this evening. And every person you link up with must be so happy when they see the casting because you are so tuned into your partners. I remember feeling this way about getting paired up with Pam .s.levy or knowing that she and I were really close together in larger groups. You’re like Pam was to me. A really great partner in movement and ensemble. You’re so understanding of time and space. It’s like you just “get it” in a way that everyone must be so eager to dance with you. I wish I were young again to duet with you!

What hypermobility looks like on your shoes…
I pulled these hiking sneakers out for a trip. Haven’t worn them since before COVID.
You can see which hip is more unstable by the wear/tear of the medial ankle area of my sneaker.
Since working on zoom with my clients and doing more hip stabilization exercises, my sneakers no longer get this wear pattern.
How do you gauge your progress?
What story do your shoes tell?

Our last day here in Helsinki at and has been so wonderful.
Being surrounded by incredible movement experts and great minds makes it so hard to say goodbye.
We are so thankful and blessed to have been invited by Jarmo Ahonen to land in his nest.
Thank you all for the beautiful experiences we’ve had over these last two weeks.
Until next time, dear friends!
Our first few days in the beautiful country of Finland 🇫🇮 have been truly outstanding.
We have been graciously hosted by and here in Helsinki.
We have so much appreciation for everyone who came out to learn and share in movement and learning with us!
No better feeling than doing what you love with the one you love 💕
A heartfelt thank you to all of the people who have served and gave their lives to protect us.
And to the families who have lost their loved ones in the service, may God bless you and watch over you.

My Payána,
I write this to you in the pauses between each work you are performing at the 2023 Joyce season…I’m at your matinee on Saturday on the edge of my seat, close to the stage in the first Loge.
We have just been bathed in your glory in ROUGES. I stay in awe of your command of the material at such a young age. Paired with a company veteran, Patrick Needham, you hold your own with power and grace. I am reminded that power is not aggressive, rather confident and true. As you are here.
Can’t wait for the next work. Here we go!! House to half…
For MG: The Movie
Well…I waited the longest time for you to grace the stage again and then…there you were reminding me the importance of TIME. Intuition for when to speed up, the control it takes to slow down and the incredible discipline to be still on stage. Your embodiment of Trisha’s role is immaculate in every way. It’s your own and so respectful and honorable of her legacy. What a gift you just gave me!?! Thank you, My Payána, for growing beyond my greatest expectations into a versatile artist, full of dimension and perspectives. You’re like a beautiful cubist painting. I see all the sides, all the surfaces, all at once.
LETS TALK ABOUT BLEEDING:
This piece is the reason why one must obtain technique before abandoning it. It’s the only way to find the stamina and quality and agility to infuse every molecule with staccato, change on a dime to vibrato and then sustainato without losing flow and focus. I’m so impressed with how you continually hold your own with these masters of performance who have more than 10 years of experience on you!
You’re a goddess and I love you 💕

FIVE Must Do’s In the Studio
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
1️⃣ALWAYS spot the push through bar. I spot the push through bar for ALL EXERCISES even when my clients are working with Seated Push Through and Circumduction. I also always cue to keep the FINGERS WRAPPED on the bar at all times. While I have been criticized for being “unnecessarily cautious” on safety of the bar in this way, none of my clients (or I) are at risk for getting a bar in the teeth or the shins!
2️⃣ALWAYS clean the apparatus after each client INCLUDING THE RISERS, HANDLES and STRAPS. You’ll never find fingerprints on the apparatus at the start of your session with me because I wipe every surface that has been touched and use a UVB box for cloth straps. I also ALWAYS use a fresh towel to clean. I NEVER REUSE a cleaning towel from client to client.
3️⃣ALWAYS eat before your shift. Fuel your body and your brain before you get going on a block of sessions or classes. Eating prior to starting my shift gives me energy, mental clarity and grounds me. If you hear my stomach roar during a session, you’re likely hearing me digest my protein shake or almond butter sandie!
4️⃣ALWAYS turn off your noisemakers and alarms before starting your shift. Keeping my alerts off helps me maintain my focus on my clients. I want my clients to know they are the center of my attention at all times during the session.
5️⃣ALWAYS ask “how can I help you today?” Asking your client how you can help them versus “how do you feel?” is a strategy I learned from one of my Mentors Brent D. Anderson Founder of Polestar Pilates International . When we ask our clients how we can help them, we remind them that they play the MOST IMPORTANT ROLE in how their body feels and that what we do is a TEAM EFFORT. We do NOT FIX people. We FACILITATE HEALING and INDEPENDENCE through MOVEMENT.

The leg spring is helping me find a more effortless hip crease in devant and a la seconde movements. The spring in the opposite arm is helping me fire up my x-lat chain = stabilizing me.
When I stand in the springs, I feel lots of length in my spine. While the springs are drawing the femoral head and humoral head into the sockets, the spine can decompress.

I had the honor of dropping in to witness Trisha Brown Dance Company class taught by Oluwadamilare Ayorinde on Friday.
This September marks 10 years since I met Dare and worked with him through his undergrad years. Those years, with his cohort, were especially sweet teaching years for me. I was recovering from my career ending 3rd hip surgery. Struggling to prove my worth where I was working. Seeking more stability in my career. The classroom (as it was for me as a child) was my temple. Magic flowed through the air when I was with this group.
I sensed that magic again on Friday witnessing Dare teach. Now, an established artist, in his movement element, sharing his craft and his unique perspective on movement with dedicated students of all ages.
Like the mentors and teachers I had in the Nikolais/Louis tradition (Murray Louis, Claudia Gitelman, Tito del Saz, Pat Mayer, Gale Ormiston, Beverly Blossom) Dare teaches by doing. He answers questions by embodying the movement. He calls upon all of his rich and diverse influences, creating a beautiful amalgamation of what he has experienced, what he has learned and who he is as a creative being.
When watching Dare teach, the following came to mind for me:
-Articulation of movement, quality of movement and pairing a rhythm or song to phrase work are tenants of great movement artists that traverse time and all styles of dance.
-Class is a sacred practice. As important as the performance. Dare made beautiful parallels between the classroom space and the stage space. Calling upon the street sounds like the TBDC calls upon the marching band in Foray Forêt.
-When one answers movement questions by moving, a circular paradigm in the teaching space is established, a collective experience is had.
-Meshing images, sensation, song and outlining the specific quality of movement makes each gesture and phrase unique to its choreographer.
Once again, I am moved from the inside out by sharing time and space with Dare.
Thank you, Dare, for reminding me why I love movement so much. My heart is full and I am also so very proud of YOU.
