Our Story

Officially launched on in July of 2012, Coming of Age NYC is a new establishment of a national initiative designed to help individuals 50+ connect and contribute to their communities. We also hope to help New York City organizations better utilize the skills, passions, and interests of those 50 and older.

Coming of Age is a national program that began in 2002 in Philadelphia and has been replicated in a variety of cities across the country. In 2010, Rimas Jasin, Executive Director of PSS, took the lead in establishing COA in New York. Working with Dick Goldberg, Director of the national office of Coming of Age, PSS soon found five innovative agencies to partner with it. These agencies had the vision to see both the need and the potential – as well as the leadership and courage to step up and take on this new project .

In the Spring of 2011, EmblemHealth came on board as the initiative’s Founding Sponsor. In the Fall of 2012, NYC Service awarded COA NYC special funding. Thanks to NYC Service and EmblemHealth’s generous support, Coming of Age NYC is now positioned to help those 50+ explore their future and find ways to connect with their communities.

Spearheaded by PSS (Presbyterian Senior Services), the initiative currently consists of ten leading, innovative and diverse nonprofit agencies partnering together. They are:

Community Service Society/RSVP
DOROT
The Educational Alliance
Encore.org
Hudson Guild
JASA (Jewish Association Serving the Aging)
National Executive Services Corps (NESC)
ReServe, Inc.
The Transition Network
United Neighborhood Houses (UNH)

With special funding from NYC SERVICE,Coming of Age NYC offers workshops, trainings and special presentations to the public.

We encourage you to sign up for our Coming of Age NYC E-Newsletters, and to email us at [email protected] to receive news and announcements, and notifications about events and opportunities. Or, email: [email protected]
