NYU students in the "Disability in a Global Context" course traveled to Wonju to learn about the research from Yonsei OT faculty and got to know the Yonsei OT students over lunch. They spent that afternoon at HIRA, South Korea's health insurance review and assessment, to learn about the national healthcare and reimbursement systems.

On another day, Dr. Yumi Ju hosted students at the beautiful Dongguk University campus in Seoul. Students were able to try out smart phone hand assessments and VR assessments for functional cognition.

This summer's OT course "Disability in a Global Context" gave students the opportunity to visit to the Mechanical Engineering Department at Seoul National University with Dr. Andrew Jung to learn about various technologies in development in the lab and provide OT perspectives for final student assistive tech projects.

Later in the trip, students enjoyed the beautiful KAIST campus in Daejeon. They were very impressed with the innovative technology explored at Dr. Park's Neuro robotics lab and Dr. Myung's AI and urban robotics lab for smart cities.

As part of the Disability in a Global Context course in South Korea this summer, NYU students and Dr. Grace Kim enjoyed a mix of traditional and modern culture days. They explored Gyeongbokgung Palace, Korean Folk Village, Yongjusa Temple, and Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (UNESCO Heritage site). On other days, the group glimpsed into the hi-tech world with a gamer exhibit at HiKR Ground, and attended a baseball game.

The Department of Occupational Therapy is pleased to announce that OT PhD student Joana Nana Serwaa Akrofi has been selected as the recipient of the New York University Africa House Thoyer Fellowship to support her research. Joana shared reflections on receiving this award below:

𝗝𝗼𝗮𝗻𝗮:
I recently had the honor of receiving the NYU Africa House Thoyer Fellowship. This fellowship has propelled me a step forward in one branch of my research agenda which involves using decolonizing methodologies to create an Afrocentric occupational therapy practice in Africa.

As the first NYU Steinhardt Occupational Therapy student to receive the award, I’m truly humbled and validated in my conviction that advancing occupational therapy practice has broader economic and developmental impact for society. Occupational therapists are scientists, advocates, change makers, policy influencers and so much more! Realizing our potential for impact, we owe it to ourselves and the society at large to be the best possible practitioners that we can be.

One of the ultimate outcomes of my research work is to empower my fellow African occupational therapy practitioners to be confident in our identity, utilize our indigenous knowledge and resources, and fully embrace the power we have to be agents of change in our communities.

I received my award from Prof. Yaw Nyarko and Dr. Offiong Aqua, two very inspirational leaders at NYU Africa House. I look forward to engaging actively in the intellectual life of Africa House and bringing in my expertise as an occupational therapist and healthcare practitioner to discussions and development initiatives relating to the African continent.

I'm grateful for my amazing mentors Dr. Janet Njelesani and Prof. Kristie Patten, esteemed faculty at NYU Steinhardt Occupational Therapy particularly Dr. Tsu-Hsin Howe and Dr. Grace J. Kim who encouraged me to pursue this work and submit for this fellowship, Dora Onwumere and Kavitha M., my PhD mentors and support system, and all my family and friends (who make me feel like I'm the world's best OT each day, probably because I'm the only OT they know😅😍). Suffice to say, my wins are never mine alone.

But also very importantly, this is a win for occupational therapy practice in Africa, for all my fellow African practitioners who are striving day in and day out to be relevant, respectful, and responsive to our communities and cultures✊🏿

And finally thank you to God, who has given me the passion and resilience for this and many other worthy causes!
