At New New York Urologic, Center for precision medicine, partnered with Focalyx, we have treated over 1000 patients with this new surgical alternative to radical prostatectomy or radiation called Focal Therapy for men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. We started offering this form of treatment to our patients in late 2018. Our results have been reviewed and published.

The standard treatment options for men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer are either a surgery that is called radical prostatectomy, radiation therapy or active surveillance.

Surgery is considered the gold standard treatment options for anyone diagnosed with prostate cancer with intention for cure, however This option can also leave significant number of men with permanent loss of s*xual function, and some with moderate to severe urinary incontinence. Even though surgical and non-surgical options exists for these men, the outcomes are not guaranteed.

With radiation therapy, similar permanent side effects can be expected, but not immediately. However, when these occur and if they occur, treatments could be more challenging and the outcomes are less guaranteed.

The active surveillance option is offered to men with less aggressive forms of prostate cancer. The goal is to delay the treatment to a later time to avoid or delay the side effects as long as possible. However, more than 50% of patients will fall out of active surveillance within two years and for a few might already be too late.

Focal therapy is an alternative surgical option. The intention is to destroy only parts of the prostate gland which has cancer and leaving the health parts intact, therefore minimizing the treatment related side effects such as s*xual dysfunction and urinary incontinence.

It starts with accurately mapping the prostate gland for extent of the disease and proper patient selection.

At New York Urologic, led by Dr. Farshad Shafizadeh and his team of experienced staff and associates, this treatment is done in the office as an ambulatory procedure. Majority of patients only receive local anesthesia and some under IV sedation.
