Happy Pride Month. Love is the foundation of positive impact. The Ripple Center is fully committed to providing access to changemakers regardless of who we love.
Reflect. Empower. Unite. Pride Month 2024’s theme encourages us all to reflect on the challenges we have overcome together and “empowers us to take action in shaping our collective future. At a time of division in our country and the world, this year’s theme calls for unity within and throughout the LGBTQIA+ community and is a call to action for ALL allies, especially those in government and the private sector, to demonstrate their alliance with the community-at-large at this critical time in our nation's history.” (nycpride.org)

The Ripple Fellows had the chance to speak with Mary & Zach Ben, Founders of Bidii Baby Foods, LLC - an agricultural cooperative registered on the Navajo Nation created out of concern for the low accessibility of healthy traditional foods for young children across the reservation. "Bidii" in Navajo translates to continuously eating or snacking. Permaculture and traditional Navajo growing techniques are utilized when planting, cultivating, and harvesting produce.

George Washington Carver made significant contributions to American agriculture and pioneered several practices that align with regenerative agriculture. He championed the practice of crop rotation, reinvigorated southern soils by introducing nitrogen-fixing crops and taught poor southern farmers—both white and black— more sustainable farming practices including the use of organic fertilizers. We acknowledge and celebrate the efforts of George Washington Carver and the many black entrepreneurs in the US that have helped change economic systems of oppression in order to positively impact people and the planet.

Sarah Breedlove was the first child in her family born into freedom after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. She went on to be known as Madam C. J. Walker and became an independent hairdresser and retailer of cosmetic creams. And by 1917, the company claimed to have trained nearly 20,000 women as sales agents for the product. PROBLEM:
40 million Gen Zers plan on starting an impact enterprise, but guidance, customers, and capital are unavailable to them.
SOLUTION:
The Ripple Center Fellowship provides curriculum, business planning, industry leaders, mentors and potential investors for a select cohort of Gen Zers to launch a social impact enterprise, where protecting people and the planet and making a profit are equally important.
Business and industry can be a powerful platform for social and environmental justice reforms. That takes fortitude, ethics, and resistance. Equity of outcome can never be guaranteed, but as entrepreneurs and industry leaders, we sure should be focused on equity of opportunity. As Black History Month kicks off, The Ripple Center acknowledges and celebrates James Forten, who invented a sailmaking device and turned it into a profitable business in the very early 1800s. He hired black and white workers, hoping to demonstrate that both races could coexist equally. He used his wealth to assist with abolitionist efforts. James Forten, you are an important part of our American entrepreneurial history.

WE’RE COMING HOME TO NEW JERSEY…
The Ripple Center is a thriving ecosystem that has created a network of entrepreneurs, experts, professionals, mentors, and organizations who share the common goal of creating a thriving economy that accounts for people and the planet. Beginning in August of 2022, we implemented two consecutive national pilot Fellowships in alignment with our mission of empowering young adults, from mostly emerging communities, to succeed as social entrepreneurs and conscientious organizational leaders.
These pilots have demonstrated our success in implementing a strong fellowship program at the national level. A core learning of the Ripple Center, however, is that there is an opportunity to deepen impact and create a more powerful “rippling effect” by zeroing in at a more local level. We have therefore made the strategic decision to concentrate in New Jersey for the next few years. By narrowing our geographic focus with the same quality and intentionality of our existing program, we envision an even stronger impact for our Fellows and for the communities they serve.
The selection criteria for the Fellowship will therefore shift and now include a geographic requirement. Applicants must be 18-24 year olds who will be living, working, or going to school in the state of New Jersey during the duration of the Fellowship (9/7/24 - 4/6/25). The application deadline has been extended until April 7, 2024 and the program will begin September 7, 2024.
The Ripple Center identifies and nurtures entrepreneurs who have a vision for a better future and provides the resources, education, mentorship, and a network in which they can thrive in a competitive marketplace. We want to be the compassionate first step into the entrepreneurial landscape for those who have little access and resources. We are excited to embark on this next phase in the great state of New Jersey.

The journey of a startup entrepreneur or organizational leader is full of opportunities and challenges. James Wilson, CEO & Co-Founder of reUser, had an incredibly interactive session with our Fellows about product development and what it’s like to start up an environmentally focused business. reUser provides software to help dining services and their clients save on takeout packaging expenses and reduce their environmental impact.
As one Fellow put it after the session, “Hearing Jame’s areas of growth and challenges helps me better understand how to reach my target audience best.”
Sending warm wishes for a Hanukkah celebration full of light, laughter and love and hoping it is a season of peace, prosperity and good health for all.
The Ripple Center is excited to welcome Geoscape Solar as our newest sponsor. Geoscape Solar’s mission is to build a more sustainable future by creating opportunities for commercial, non-profit, and residential clients to take advantage of the evolution of green energy and help cool our planet. Geoscape Solar’s vision is living in a world where renewable energy and storage systems replace fossil fuels.
With this generous sponsorship, Geoscape Solar will be helping to fund our Fellows in-person experience taking place in Tempe, AZ from January 5-9, 2024. These five days on the campus of Arizona State University give the Fellows time to reconvene in person with the cohort and work with each other and the nuts and bolts of their developing business and organizational plans.

As human populations and the consumer economy continue to grow, the natural resources that sustain us are becoming more fragile and finite. The only antidote is to create new systems that benefit people and the planet long term.
