Tuesday & Wednesday 7/25 & 26 Debrief at Paraa Safari Lodge

We enjoyed 2 days of safari at Paraa Safari Lodge, with time for relaxing, eating delicious food and enjoying the beauty of God’s wild creations. On the Wednesday early morning game drive we saw elephants, including a mama and 1 week old baby, leopards, lions, water buffalo, antelope, birds, and many giraffe. Having been on this safari previously, God snowed off in a big way this time with all of the wild life that we got to see in a single drive. It truly was exhilarating!🐆🦁🐘🦒🐃🦅

And finally… A Heartfelt Thank You!

Another Uganda journal entry 🇺🇬 recapping days 5&6!
Sunday 6/23 - Day 5

Day 5 was spent at Gulu Bible Community Church for 2 church services with Andre preaching 2 powerful message. We experienced an indescribable time of worship and prayer. Our dear friends at GBCC prayed powerfully for our team leaders, our church and our entire team. It was an honor to experience “church” in Uganda.

After church we went to Juvenile Ramand Home where over 200 detained youth were gathered together to receive gifts of soap, sugar and toothbrushes and paste as well as listen to testimonies from 5 of our team members. It was amazing to watch how God used each individual who shared to touch youth in the audience at various times. Regardless of our past, God has a great and beautiful future for all those who believe in Him. After another powerful message by Andre, at least, 100 youth accepted Christ that day! It was truly overwhelming! (No photos for obvious reasons…but the memories are permanently imprinted on our hearts and minds)

Monday - 6/24 Day 6

We arrived at Laminto village ready to provide medical and dental care along with VBS for the children. We were met by far more people than expected, with over 900 registering for medical treatment. Knowing we didn’t have the time or supplies to see everyone, we asked them to choose between medical or dental services and proceeded to see 40 at a time until time ran out. It was heartbreaking not being able to treat everyone.

The medical team started immediately, but we soon discovered that one of our dental bags with essential tools had been left behind at the hotel. While waiting for the bag, we began with dental screenings, and the VBS team came to the rescue, keeping the children busy with crafts and games. Some of team played in the hot sun with the kids all day! The entire team was incredibly attentive and stepped in wherever needed without being asked.

We managed to treat around 75 dental patients and about 350 medical patients, far fewer than the 900+ registered. We pray that we helped those who needed it most. The day was full of highs and lows, but God’s hand was evident throughout. In the end, we hope and pray that God’s love was shown through us.

We are back for another Uganda journal entry from our trip. Today recapping days 3 and 4. 🇺🇬

Friday 6/21 Day 3
On Day 3 we returned to Hope of Glory Christian School for a few hours to have fun and play with the school children. Our team leader Brandon introduced the children to the Clapping game, which was a huge hit. We then split up into stations for soccer, parachute, jumping rope and pop fly. Before we left for the day, the children performed a delightful dance in our honor.

After a local lunch in Gulu, we headed to the Main Market for a cultural shopping experience followed by a little rest back at the hotel before we headed out for another day of ministry the next day.

Later that afternoon we had the joy of learning more about Pastor Martin’s vision for the Hope of Glory School as he shared the preliminary architectural plans for the property. Stay tuned…we will be sharing more about this in the future🥰

Saturday 6/22 - Day 4
On day 4 we got to visit with our friends, Pastor Edwin and Mama Evelyn, in Kitgum at one of the most recent of 45 GBCC church plants in the area. We played games and did crafts with the children who are part of the Alive Children ministry at Kitgum. A few team members shared their testimonies and Andre shared the gospel with the people there. We had the great privilege of praying for Pastor Edwin and Mama Evelyn, the plans for the future of the church and pray over the church building that was going to be used for the first service the next day.

We are back with another Uganda recap! 🇺🇬
Wednesday and Thursday 6/19 & 20 Days 1 & 2

The first and second days of ministry in Gulu were amazing! The medical team was able to see about 280 people from the school and surrounding community and the dental team worked on 75 people mostly from the community.

We set up our dental clinic in a tent at Hope of Glory Christian School. Our dental team consisted of Dr. Jones, Dental Tech and RN Rusty, joined by Dr. Geoffrey from Gulu along with his dental students, Josephine and Godfrey. Holly, Shelby, Kiana, Jess, Brandon and Lillian from our team played key roles as they received dental patients, some who had never seen a dentist before. The dental team obtained preliminary dental intake information and prepped dental instruments to aid in the flow so Jones could see as many as 10 patients per hour. We had the opportunity to pray for each person. It was truly a team effort and was only done by everyone working together sharing their gifts and talents to care for the children, teachers, pastors, staff and community at Hope of Glory School and Gulu Bible Community Church in Gulu. Throughout the day, we carried out screenings, performed x-rays using a portable x-ray machine and laptop, and performed fillings and extractions. With guidance and supervision by Dr. Jones, Lillian single handedly and with the utmost joy managed the sterilization of equipment out in the field. This was a humble job that was critical to the functioning of the entire dental outreach. We could not have done what we did without her Lillian on our team.

Debbie had the joy of delivering toothbrushes to the school children along with a lesson on oral hygiene education through games and a large tooth brush and model to practice proper brushing. Everyone had a great time learning how to care for their teeth while playing.

Debbie and Mike along with other team members who have sponsored students at the school had the opportunity to spend quality time with them.

Emily and Blake worked on the medical team to provide necessary medications to those seen by the physicians, one of whom was Dr. Stephen who is finishing up his third year of medical school.

During the medical and dental clinics, Andre shared his gift of preaching the word as people waited patiently to be seen. He, Audrey, Janae and Angela jumped in at a moments notice to organize crafts or games for the children.

Each person shared the love of Jesus wherever they went.

Looking back, our mission trip to Uganda with RockHarbor Church has been a life-changing experience. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve and learn from such an amazing community both with our RH Uganda Team as well as our friends and family at Gulu Bible Community Church. Thank you to everyone who supported us on this incredible journey. Please enjoy some of the highlights of treasured memories we were unable to post while gone but continue to reflect on with great fondness and post over the next few weeks.

Monday 6/17 - Kampala

On Monday 6/17 we made it to Kampala after 2 days of travel from LAX to Dubai to Entebbe. We had lunch with our Ugandan friends who met us at the airport Stephen, Brian, Lillian, Moses and the best bus driver ever Michael. We did some final shopping in the city in preparation for our time in Gulu. We stayed at a local hotel/Air BnB style in Kampala, enjoyed a lovely breakfast on the patio and jumped onto our bus for the week for the 8-hour drive to Gulu.

Tuesday 6/18 - Welcome Dinner at Pastor Martin and Mama Hope’s home

We were welcomed with open arms, big hugs and lots of love by the leadership of Gulu Bible Community Church (GBCC) at the home of Pastor Martin and Mama Hope. We were so excited to see old friends and make new.

Uganda Update🇺🇬
Days 1 and 2 we did ministry work partnering with GBCC - Gulu Bible Community Church; worked alongside 2 Ugandan DDS and 2 Ugandan Dental Students; 2 Ugandan Medical Doctors and 1 Nurse. 🦷 🩺

Day 1 Hope of Glory School - Dental care to 150 school children and staff; dental education to over 100 children in their classrooms - 3 different presentations and games to children ages 5-7; 8-10; 11-14 🤍

Day 2 Hope of Glory School - Dental Medical care to school children and staff and community; over 200 total; 80 dental patients 🤍

We are loving this time being with and caring for the people of Gulu; praying with and for; spending time with our Ugandan friends.

UGANDA UPDATE 🇺🇬 (more photos in stories!)
We had a long travel journey! We departed LAX on Saturday afternoon for a 16-hour flight to Dubai. Had a 10-hour layover in Dubai and then took an early 5:30 6-hour flight to Entebbe. We stayed overnight in capital city of Kampala and did some shopping for supplies before we departed early Tuesday morning for an 8-hour drive to Gulu.
The pastoral team from Gulu Bible Community Church (GBCC) welcomed us with open arms and big Ugandan hugs at the home of Pastor Martin and Mama Hope. We were so happy to see old friends and meet new.

Wednesday we are excited to serve the Hope of Glory Christian School (HOGS) where Mike will be doing exams and dental treatment on the children and staff at HOGS. Debbie will be teaching the children ages 7-12, through a presentation and some fun games on how to take care of their teeth and bodies with good oral hygiene. The Uganda 2024 Team was commissioned Sunday at RockHarbor Church.
Dr. Jones and Debbie will be visiting their friends and serving the community through dental and medical missions in and around Gulu from 6/15-6/29/2024.

RockHarbor has been partnering with Gulu Bible Community Church since 2006. After the nation was war torn, the Lord opened a door to partner with key leaders to plant GBCC. Today, we continue to work alongside the church to see Jesus made known through a church planting movement across Uganda and aid in the development of local business and education through Renew Gulu.

Hope of Glory Christian School Building Project

In faith the GBCC leadership gave up the school facility they were renting. With those funds and the help of some generous supporters, GBCC began the building process for a new school campus for Hope of Glory Christian School built on the 50 acres of land Rockharbor purchased for GBCC over 10 years ago.

Gulu Bible Community Church (GBCC) has a vision to raise up the next generation of Christian leaders for Northern Uganda. They believe the best way to do this is to begin with the children and follow them all they way through their education to one day help them become pastors, teachers and more.... Hope of Glory Christian School was born on this foundation and with this goal in mind.

God is on the move! The first classrooms are constructed, a new septic system and solar system has been installed, flush toilets and showers are in, and dormitories have been built that hold 200 boys and 200 girls. The goal is growing the facility to house over 600 kids!

Not only does the school help children become the next faith leaders of Northern Uganda, it provides a safe place for each child to grow and develop a healthy life. Hope of Glory School is a staple of the Christian faith for Northern Uganda and brings sustainability for the future of GBCC.

You have the opportunity to support in two key ways:
1) Children need sponsorships to go to school through Renew Gulu Child Development Program.
2) Play a part in funding the building the school that will one day house nearly 650 children.

Here’s what Dr. Jones had to say about the procedure:
“Reid had a terrible auto accident resulting in the loss is 2 teeth and another severely intruded. 2 teeth were extracted and implants placed by my periodontist. An orthodontist extruded and re-aligned his front teeth. Final restoration was an implant supported porcelain bridge and a porcelain crown on one of his natural front teeth. He wore provisional implant supported crowns to allow the gums to heal. Pink porcelain was added to the bridge to hide the residual spaces and defects in the gums.”

The annual event recognizes the service of all men and women of the American military forces on Armed Forces day weekend (usually the third Saturday in May.) Approximately 1,776 American flags with yellow ribbons and commemorative pictures or memorabilia are assembled and installed by volunteers on hilltops overlooking Newport Bay.
