Circa 1986. Can anyone guess when the name was amended to Omulu Capoeira Group?
Mestre Preguiça arrived in the USA in 1983, started Senzala Santa Cruz in 1984, and then relocated to SF, where he established a new name for his group, Omulu Senzala Capoeira. The name was eventually amended to Omulu Capoeira Group in 1994.
Mestre Preguiça has trained thousands of students here in the Bay Area and throughout the world. He is a living legend who continues to create regardless of the coming and going of the times. We are honored and proud to continue his works here in Oakland, CA, and to carry the name of the group while dedicating ourselves through our works towards positive outcomes, through Capoeira for the communities we serve, while preserving the institutions of methodology, technique, discipline, accountability, structure, and so much more.

What a beautiful moment, pure in frozen time. Two brothers in Capoeira, both disciples of Mestre Bimba, with so much fire, internal youth, joy for the art, and that they keep sharing with all of us. I have been overwhelmed by the level of history made at this event from having with us Mestres Acordeon, Preguiça, and Nenel to witnessing two of my friends receiving the red cord (cordão vermelho).
I received full brown cord (cordão marrom), leaving me with my mind blown. I am still in a state of shock, so to speak. For me personally (no disrespect intended for this level), the title of Professor or its significance in capoeira is importantfor so many reasons, but what is at the forefront of my mind at this time is that cordão marrom is the cordão that my teacher, the late Mestre Carlos Aceituno, was when I started my training under him in 1996 in Oakland, CA at the Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts (formally known as the Alice Arts center). I will never in my wildest dreams be able to fill his shoes or the shoes of our Grão-mestre, Mestre Preguiça; ever. They have paved the way for me to make and wear my own shoes.
Thank you to everyone who respected my left hip condition. Thank you for welcoming me into my new cord, and most of all, thank you for coming together as a supportive community for Mestre Espantalho and Mestra Sombra's Formatura! It was really an honor and blessing to have each and every one of you there with us in the physical and spiritual. Please excuse my lack of tagging anyone in this post. IG only allows 20 tags, and I maxed out!

Confirmed!
We have another great surprise. Our dear friend Professora Sombra will also be receiving her red cord at our Formatura in Oakland! We am very excited for her. With a strong commitment to Omulu Capoeira, she has invested 30yrs of her life supporting the group, being an example of kindness and compassion, being there for mestre when he needs her, growing her group in the Los Angeles area, and being a true friend to all of us. We're happy for you, Sombra! Aside from all your achievements, you are a wonderful mother, wife, community activist through outreach in Capoeira, and one of the most successful people we have the privilege of being friends with. You inspire many, you inspire me (Busca Hé), and I am honored to be your friend.
Finished class!
The youth look great!!!
Monitor Apache's 1st event! Let's go!!!
Mestre's energy was great to have in our space again. He had us stretching, focusing on basics, reminding everyone about the importance of respect, family, unity, tradition, and self-awareness in general. My favorite underlying message was how old-school still has its place in Capoeira!
It's really nice to have you back, Mestre!!!
Remembering the stain on this country's history whereby it took the Army to force the hands of Texan slavers to free their captives. This image here is representative of the USCT, XXV Army Corp. Coincidentally, the USCT marched into Galveston for supplies on the way to the Texas-Mexico border where they were to become the Army of Occupation along the Texas-Mexico border, guarding against Napoleon III’s French troops as well as watching for any resurgent Confederate activity. They arrived in Galveston to resupply at the same time as the white Union General, Granger arrived. All of their presence provided a powerful image to the island’s enslaved people, who were oblivious to the fact that they had been granted freedom by Lincoln two years prior.
