Acupuncture is a useful tool to rehab horses after soft tissue injury by helping to restore nerve function and increase muscle mass as seen in this patient with a radial nerve injury.

⭐️Laser therapy is a game changer⭐️ A non-invasive, rapid way to decrease inflammation, speed healing, and alleviate pain. In this case, chiropractic adjustment and class IV laser therapy were used in conjunction to successfully treat back soreness and get this athlete ready to compete

Acupuncture brings the body and it’s energy(qi) back into balance while benefits include natural pain relief, regulation of the immune system and hormones, as well as anti-inflammatory benefits. Acupuncture is a facet of traditional Chinese medicine centered on the consideration and treatment of the whole patient and environmental factors affecting them.

Veterinary spinal manipulation or “chiropractic” care refers to the process of returning a joint to its normal range of motion. When a joint’s movement becomes restricted or “stuck”, it can also affect the surrounding tendons, ligaments, veins, arteries, and nerves limiting blood flow and creating nerve pain. Left untreated, joint restrictions can cause the horse to compensate in posture and movement leading to secondary musculoskeletal injuries

Good luck to all the horses and our clients with connections running this weekend!

Florida Connections to the Kentucky Derby!

Proud to say most of the Kentucky Derby field has Florida connections. With world class prep races and sales, and a great place for breeding and early schooling for racehorses in Ocala, Marion County, it's easy to see why. Thanks to Brock Sheridan who makes the connections.

Horse in this year’s Derby with Florida connections include:

+ Forte, had his early training at Ocala Stud Farm and is co-owned by Vincent Viola, who also owns the Florida Panthers of the NHL.
+ Kingsbarns was trained in his youth by Tom McCrocklin, who also consigned him to the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Park Sale.
+ Lord Miles is a homebred for longtime Florida breeder Peter Vegso in the name of his Vegso Racing Stable. Lord Miles is also out of the Florida-bred mare Lady Esme.
+ Mage received his early training by Becky Thomas’ Sequel Bloodstock based in Ocala.
+ Angel of Empire, who received his early training at Barry Berkelhammer’s Abracadabra Farms in Ocala.
+ Practical Move’s grandsire in Florida-bred Preakness (G1)-winner Afleet Alex and his early training came in Williston at Barry Eisaman’s Eisaman Equine. Eisaman consigned him at the 2022 OBS Spring Sale.

Here’s a nice article looking further at biomechanics of ground poles and a discussion of other rehabilitation tools for all my clients out there rehabbing this summer!

**NEW POLE WORK EXERCISE RESEARCH**

Great to work with an exciting group of researchers looking at the effect that pole work exercise has on equine locomotion.

Here is a new paper published in Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, titled “Effect of ground and raised poles on kinematics of the walk”, authors: Vicki A. Walker*, Carolyne A. Tranquillle, Russell MacKechnie-Guire, Jo Spear, Richard Newton & Rachel C.Murray*

For a limited time, this paper is available as Open Access using the link below. Massive thank you to the Petplan Charitable Trust who funded this research.

Meet The Vet:

Dr. Keely Ubide graduated from University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 2014. After completing an internship in Ocala, she stayed on with the practice as an associate focusing on sports medicine and imaging. During this time, she completed the Chi University’s courses in spinal manipulation and acupuncture. After seeing the remarkable benefits of these treatment modalities, she joined an integrative veterinary specialty practice to concentrate and improve on these techniques. In the fall of 2021, Dr. Ubide launched her own chiropractic and acupuncture practice, Aligned Veterinary Services, in partnership with FEVA. She enjoys being part of a collaborative team approach in caring for and maintaining optimal performance in equine athletes. She is excited to continue offering chiropractic, acupuncture, and laser therapy services in Ocala.

How do horses benefit from chiropractic care?

The most obvious answer is through freedom of movement. Veterinary spinal manipulation (aka chiropractic) returns full range of motion to each joint and the surrounding soft tissue structures and nerves. When range of motion is compromised, significant discomfort due to adhesion formation, muscle spasm, and decreased nervous system function follows.
For the athletic horse, being balanced and free from restrictions is crucial for peak performance. Routine chiropractic care can also prevent tendon/ligament injuries, asymmetric muscle development, and muscle weakness that occur from compensatory overuse or guarding of an area. Chronic pain may also lead to behavioral changes and poor overall body condition.
