🚤 Our Marine Patrol Officers have been working tirelessly to ensure waterway safety during the 4th of July and Operation Dry Water. Here are 3 common mistakes we encountered to help those looking to own a vessel or paddle craft:
1️⃣ Registration & decal display: Follow the instructions on the back of the decals and display current registration, even if the boat is docked.
2️⃣ Paddle crafts & non-motorized vessels less than 16ft: Carry a USCG approved life jacket (PFD) and a sound producing device. Municipal code requires wearing the PFD. Other vessels must have enough PFDs on board for everyone and a type IV throwable.
3️⃣ Boaters Safety Card: If operating a vessel with 15 hp or more and born after Jan 1, 1955, carry the Mandatory Boaters Safety Card.
Stay safe on the water! 🚣♀️🌟

In the mood for a cozy campfire? You don’t need a permit for a “s’mores-sized” fire.
Just keep in mind the following rules:
Use only dry, seasoned firewood
Don’t make the fire larger than 3 feet across
Never leave a fire unattended
Extinguish with water when done
Do NOT bury fires on the beach - this can cause serious injury to others!
Our beaches attract excited visitors of all ages. A sharp eye can help keep everyone safe.
Please be aware that we do not have a surf rescue team in our city and there are no lifeguards on the beach.
Parents, please stay close to your children. Small ones should be within arm’s length. Keep a weather eye on older, more adventurous kids, too. It doesn’t take long for the ocean to overwhelm overly-confident kids.
We recommend everyone who enters the water wear a life jacket.
Keep a blanket handy - our water is cold all year round!

Fireworks Area
On the beach from the Damon Rd. approach to the Marine View Dr. approach.
No fireworks are allowed in the city or on the Dune Trail.
Fireworks Hours
July 2 & 3: Noon - 11:00 p.m.
July 4: Noon - 11:59 p.m.
Per OSMC 8.12.025 Fireworks—Restricted use.
It is unlawful for any person to use, discharge, ignite or explode any fireworks within the city except on the beach between the Marine View Drive Beach Access and the Damon Beach Approach a minimum of one hundred feet west of the dunes. (Ord. 845 § 3, 2008: Ord. 582 § 1, 1995)
Our average water temperatures range from the mid-40s to the mid-60s. These temperatures can cause hypothermia.
There are no lifeguards on the beach.
The ocean currents are strong and dangerous no matter the time of tide. You cannot swim against the currents.
A rip current is a narrow, fast-moving channel of water that starts near the beach and extends offshore through a line of breaking waves.
If you do get caught in a rip current, the best thing you can do is stay calm. It's not going to pull you underwater; it's just going to pull you away from shore.
Call and wave for help. You want to float, and you don't want to swim back to shore against the rip current because it will just tire you out. You want to swim out of the rip, parallel to the shore, along the beach, and then follow breaking waves back to shore at an angle.
Do not attempt to rescue someone in the ocean. You will likely become a victim yourself. Call 911 and stay there!
Never turn your back on the waves. Sneaker waves are powerful waves that come high up on the beach without warning.
It is highly RECOMMENDED to wear a life jacket when playing near the water's edge.
Keep a close eye on your children.
If you are planning on parking on the beach, make sure you are aware of the tide tables in conjunction with where you park your vehicle. An important point to make is, please make sure you are looking at the tide tables for Ocean Shores and not the Seattle area because they are very different tides.
For Ocean Shores tide table go to https://www.tideschart.com/United-States/Washington/Grays-Harbor-County/Ocean-Shores/
NO PARKING ON BEACH APPROACH unless in designated area.
Sunbathing And Picnics
• Pack out your garbage.
• Do not set up a picnic on the hard packed sand where the vehicles drive.
• Do not set up at the end of a beach approach.
• Do not bury people in the sand or build a sandcastle in a high traffic area.
• Do not do anything in the main traffic area that you would not do in the street in front of your house.
• Areas Closed to Vehicles Apr. 15 – Labor Day are south of the Chance Ala Mer entrance and north of Pacific Ave entrance.

Drug Arrest
On June 2, 2024, at approximately 2:00 AM Officer Elia conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle because the driver was driving with a suspended license. Officer Balagot and Sgt Fode arrived shortly after, and the driver was taken into custody.
While conducting a search of the driver, a small bag was located, containing what is believed to be a schedule 2 stimulant (co***ne). The driver was booked into jail for a misdemeanor warrant. The driver had additional charges of driving with a suspended license and possession of a controlled substance. The vehicle was subsequently seized for evidence until a search warrant could be obtained.
On June 7, 2024, a search warrant was executed on the vehicle leading to the discovery of drug paraphernalia, scales, several substances believed to be different types of narcotics and two fi****ms not registered to the driver. Officer Elia is still attempting to track down the origins of the fi****ms. Additional charges for possession with intent to distribute, were forwarded to the Grays Harbor County Superior Court.

Summer is approaching and we are happy to see people enjoying the outdoors. Whatever your preferred outdoor activity is, the Ocean Shores Police Department is focused on your ability to do it safely. With your safety in mind, we want everyone to be aware that our Officers have seen an overwhelming increase in DUI arrests in the month of May. On Memorial weekend alone, 4 suspects were processed for driving under the influence, 3 of which were in response to collisions and thankfully no one was seriously injured. We want everyone to know that we are looking for impaired drivers on our roadways and we have zero tolerance for people who decide to get behind the wheel while impaired. Impaired driving is dangerous and illegal, and you can be arrested, fined, and have your driving privileges revoked.
If you see dangerous drivers on the roadway, call the non-emergency line at 360-533-8765. Your call could save lives!
We would like you to honor all the brave men and women who gave their precious lives for the sake of a better tomorrow, for the sake of our freedom, and for the sake of our future generations.
**Wanted suspect located and arrested**
Earlier today Deputy McKechnie and his K9 parter Titus assisted the Ocean Shores Police Department in locating a subject with an outstanding felony warrant who fled on foot. After over an hour long track through thick brush and swamps, K9 Titus located the suspect hiding in some thick brush. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.
The Hoquiam Police Department and the Aberdeen Police Department also assisted in containment and an aerial search with a drone.
Thank you to all the agencies who assisted in this great outcome. Just another example of the great teamwork that takes place among police agencies in Grays Harbor County.

🚧 Important Road Closure Update 🚧
Effective January 9, 2024, the City of Ocean Shores has temporarily closed the road at Marine View Drive between Wawona and Sea Breeze due to safety concerns. This closure includes all entrances to the berm, which are now inaccessible to the public.
To address the situation, the city is working closely with the Army Corps of Engineers to develop a backup plan. The Corps has offered to provide supersacks, which are large sandbags that can serve as a temporary solution to prevent a breach. They will be visiting Ocean Shores on January 9, 2024, to assess the situation and provide further assistance if needed.
It's important to note that the Corps is unable to take preemptive action on private property unless there is an emergency event. However, due to the city's proactive approach in mitigating risks, the Corps has assured that they will be able to provide support promptly in case of an imminent threat.
Please stay safe and avoid climbing or walking in the closed area until further notice. We appreciate your cooperation as we work together to ensure the well-being of our community.
