United Way of Thurston County

We mobilize the caring power of our community to fight for the health, education and financial stability of every person in Thurston County.

Our latest update reveals a stark reality: 35% of Washington households are living below the ALICE threshold or in poverty. While wages increased in 2022, so did the cost of living, leaving 1,059,901 households struggling to make ends meet.

ALICE is an acronym for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed โ€” households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county. While conditions have improved for some households, many continue to struggle, especially as wages fail to keep pace with the rising cost of household essentials (housing, child care, food, transportation, health care, and a basic smartphone plan). Households below the ALICE Threshold โ€” ALICE households plus those in poverty โ€” canโ€™t afford the essentials.

ALICE households have grown by 44% since 2010. The pandemic's end saw the loss of critical supports like child tax credits, further squeezing families already on the edge.

"This data is a reminder that while we have made some progress, our work is far from over," Chris Wells, Executive Director, United Way of Thurston County. "A small portion of adults (16 years and older) in Thurston County were unemployed and a large number were working in 2022. However, a substantial portion of both full and part-time workers are paid by the hour; these workers are more likely to have fluctuations in income and less likely to receive benefits."

Let's break down these barriers together. Read the full report and explore interactive dashboards at UnitedForALICE.org/Washington.

United Way is a place where people in our community come together, feel like they belong, and share hope. Right now, a lot of families in Thurston County are struggling to find that hope. More than one-third of them can't afford the things they need.

The cost of living keeps going up. The money people earn from their jobs isn't enough to pay for everything. Families have a hard time finding good childcare for their little ones. Buying a house is hard when money is tight, and prices are high. It feels like a huge weight.

But there is hope! United Way is working to fix these problems. We want everyone in Thurston County to be happy, safe, and successful. We know we can't do it alone, so we're teaming up with schools, businesses, local and county governments, and caring people like you to make big changes.

We're focusing on things we know will help families in Thurston County find hope: expanding access to child care and quality early education, starting a local skilled trades training program, encouraging high schoolers to get a certification or degree, and making affordable homeownership a possibility for all.

We would love for you to join us in making Thurston County better for everyone. You can help by giving to support our work. Just click this link to donate: https://securepayment.link/unitedwayofthurstoncounty/

SUN Bucks, Summer Grocery Benefit for Kids

SUN Bucks is a new grocery benefit available across most of the U.S. Families with eligible school-aged children can get $120 per child to buy groceries during the summer. SUN Bucks may have a different name depending on your location. Families can receive SUN Bucks on top of other benefits like SNAP and WIC, and children can continue to enjoy free SUN Meals from local meal sites or with SUN Meals To-Go.

If one is already enrolled in benefits like SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR, their school-age children will automatically be enrolled in SUN Bucks if it is available where they live. Also, if a child attends a school that offers the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program (NSLP/SBP), and the household income meets the requirements for free or reduced-price school meals, the child may automatically be enrolled in SUN Bucks.

If one is not automatically enrolled, they can apply for SUN Bucks directly. To qualify, you must meet income limits and other requirements. https://www.fns.usda.gov/summer/sunbucks
