Walk to School month is coming up in October! 3rd grade teacher Monica Lloyd (MiT 2008) shared her support for the Walk N Roll program in the most recent Olympia School District Spotlight on Success newsletter:
"She said she enjoys sharing stories with her students about the bike races she participates in during her recreational time. She explains to the students about the workouts she does to prepare to race and how the classroom “workouts” in English Language Arts and math are similar. What a wonderful way to connect the hard work in sports to the classroom!"

Ryan Campeau (MiT 2018) recently attended the National Endowment for the Humanities Landmarks: From Immigrants to Citizens: Asian Pacific Americans in the Northwest workshop at the Wing Luke Museum. Below Ryan shares why the program was effective and how she will take what she learned forward into her teaching.
“The program was deeply moving, planned throughout with not only factual information but testimonies of individuals from many different groups. The ongoing learning opportunities in the form of lectures, tours, and field trips was coordinated with resources and supports for lesson planning.”
“As an educator and student, the themes I am taking away from this week are activism, resistance, and resilience. I'm excited to integrate these themes into my Social Studies units, emphasizing for young learners not just the ways in which minorities have been historically oppressed but the ways that they formed community networks and organized against close-mindedness and discrimination.”
“Though my students may be fourth graders, I believe that framing history differently is an important early step to transforming history. I want to teach my students that we study the past not only to learn from our ancestors’ mistakes, but also to emulate their brilliance and courage. Most importantly, I want them to understand that history is not static or one-dimensional, and to grasp that every event has multiple perspectives and that their understanding is limited without seeking to understand the perspectives of a diverse array of groups.”
