Welcome a Child Home Make a Lifetime of Difference

08/04/2022

When a child gets removed from their family and placed into foster care, regardless of the reason for the removal, they inevitably experience trauma. Everything changes for them overnight. They are in new and different places with new and different people, and they have no idea how long the shuffle will last. Regardless of how hard we try, the experience is difficult at best for these kids.
Knowing we can’t make it entirely easy and seamless, foster parents simply work to do the best we can to provide, what my wife and I have come to call, “a soft place to land”.
One effective way to do this is to learn about the simple small traditions the kids might know and love from their family experience. An example of upholding these simple traditions comes from the summer we welcomed 3 kiddos into our family making us a family of 9 overnight. This was jarring and chaotic for all of us, but mostly for those 3 siblings. After a couple days went by and Friday rolled around, the oldest asked if we were going to McDonalds. My wife began to curiously explore why he thought of McDonalds and we learned that this is how their dad loved to celebrate the end of the week. “Friday is payday, and that means McDonalds!”, he explained.
This was our opportunity to provide a moment of normalcy in an otherwise chaotic week for these kids. So we loaded the 9 of us into two cars and headed for the golden arches. This small tradition upheld may not have changed the lives of these children, but it helped provide them a soft place to land for a few months before they were able to be reunited with their father.
-Todd Kinzle, foster adoptive dad and our AKB CEO.

Words from Wait No More

“Are you going to adopt him?”

A question I have heard hundreds of times.

I get it, it is a logical question to the outside world. Logic says, "He has been with you since birth, he is attached to you and you to him, he 'needs' a family, you are a family 😉."

But he has a family who loves him and the ultimate goal is always reunification when safe and possible!

Foster care, adoption, and trauma do not follow logic – they all make navigating answers to seemingly simple questions very complicated.

When I start to think too much about the “what ifs," I feel my walls build in self protection. I feel my heart beat faster and the pit in my stomach grow as tears well up in my eyes. I distance myself somehow thinking the grief of loss will be less if I “brace” myself for it.

But I can’t, I can’t love him well from a place of “what if’s."

I love him best from a place of “no matter what."

No matter if you stay or go, you are loved the same .

You are loved as if you will stay forever and as if you will leave tomorrow. You are loved as if you are mine and as if you belong to someone else. You are loved simply for being who you are and not for what you can bring to me.

Foster care has taught me how to love. It has expanded my capacity to both give and receive an unconditional love that we all deserve. What a gift this is, something I could have missed out on if I chose to live in the “what ifs” instead of the “no matter whats."
