Brundibár is a poignant and historically significant children's opera that emerged from the darkest period of human history - the Holocaust. Composed by Hans Krása, Brundibár was performed over 50 times in the Terezín concentration camp located in German-occupied Czechoslovakia.
The simple plot revolves around poor two siblings, Eloise and Annette, who need to buy milk for their sick mother. They decide to sing in the town square, but they encounter Brundibár, the bullying busker, who drives them away because he wants the square for himself. The children seek help from various animals and local children, they outwit Brundibár, claim their place in the square, and get the needed money.
Brundibár carries profound allegorical significance as it symbolizes the resilience of the human spirit against oppression and injustice. The struggle against Brundibár represents the fight against the forces of fascism during World War II, with the children embodying hope, solidarity, and the power of collective action.
Many of the children who participated in the Terezín performances were later deported to Auschwitz and other extermination camps, and most perished. But the legacy of Brundibár continues as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the importance of art in the face of tyranny.
The production will feature a small ensemble, and will feature Annilea Murphy as Eloise, Katie Auler as Annette, Megan Adelman as Brundibár, Helen McDonald as the sparrow, Lexi Prosser as the cat, and Abby Adelman as the dog.
The production is part of a double bill, along with “The Arkansaw Bear” – a children’s play that blends realism and fantasy, pathos, and humor.

Oswego Opera Theater Music - Theater - Community
Oswego Opera will present Verdi’s La Traviata, one of the gems in the world of opera. It is a classic by Giuseppe Verdi, telling the tragic love story of Violetta, a Parisian courtesan, and Alfredo, a young nobleman. The title translates to "The Fallen Woman," and is based on Alexandre Dumas’ play "La Dame aux Camélias." The music is stunning, and the emotional depth of each of the characters adds layers of intensity to this incredible story.
La Traviata will be sung by Syracuse celebrated soprano Julia Ebner, as well by New York singers Alonzo Jordán Lopez, tenor (OOT debut) and Michael Niemann, baritone. It will feature accomplished local singers in comprimario roles as well as selected students from SUNY Oswego’s StateSingers. The opera, directed by Benjamin Spierman, will be performed in Italian, with English titles projected above the stage, and accompanied by a live orchestra conducted by Juan F. La Manna.
La Traviata will be presented in Waterman Theater, on the campus of SUNY Oswego, on Saturday, November 11, at 730PM, and Sunday, November 12, at 2 PM. Tickets are available at the College Box Office in the Marano Campus Center, online at: tickets.oswego.edu, or by phone: 315-312-3073

The Oswego Opera Theater is gearing up for its fall production of La Traviata. The production will take place on Nov. 11 and 12 at Waterman Theater on the SUNY Oswego campus. This year’s opera will be directed by Juan La Manna of the SUNY Oswego Music Department and Ben Spierman of the Bronx Opera Company. Leads will be professional singers, but the chorus will be made up of local talent. Those interested in being a part of the chorus (and this wonderful opportunity) should have previous experience with a musical or opera. Making a commitment to memorize the music on your own and attendance at rehearsals is required. This includes a once-a-week rehearsal until the 2 weeks prior to the show. Then frequent rehearsals are held during those 2 weeks, generally in the evenings with a few on the weekend prior to the show. High school students through senior citizens are welcome. If interested, please contact [email protected]

The Fence. The Cage. A fence can feel like a cage if it keeps you from moving freely or feeling like a free person.
Miriam Sommerburg, who wrote the libretto for the operetta the Golden Cage, had poured her feelings into her art. Her 1944 linocut print "Behind the Fence" shows the emotion that she put into words in the operetta "The Golden Cage"
The highly anticipated recreation of this operetta written Sommerburg and composer Charles Abeles, at the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter in 1945, will be produced on Saturday November 12 at 7:30 pm and Sunday November 13, 2022 at Waterman Theater on the SUNY Oswego campus.
