Doctors of Hearing has a non profit organization that helps mainly college students that suffer from chronic depression due to hearing loss. We provide these students with support. Actor Richie Rayfield shared his amazing journey and inspiring story with those college students that do not see a future ahead of them.
The following is Richie’s story:
Hey Guys!
My name is Richie Rayfield. I am 44 years old, and have been hearing impaired since I was 19 years old.
I had to wear hearing aids due to permanent nerve damage caused by food poisoning that left me partially in a coma on a trip to Spring Break in Jamaica.
When I first found out that I had to have hearing aids, I'm not sure how I reacted but when it came to hearing loss there were two options; not hear anything at all or barely, or wear hearing aids. The choice for me was really simple. The ones I have now go into the canal, and I have had ones that were over the ear.
Please do not let a disability slow you down from achieving your dreams!
I have been an actor since I was 10 years old with breaks here and there in between. I am a proud card carrying member of the Screen Actors Guild since 2006.
I was able to join the union because of my work on Alias. and the sitcom, Girlfriends.
I worked as a background actor/stand in on That 70's Show, How I Met Your Mother, and the films Nancy Drew, Trasformers and World Trade Center.
I have also dealt with weight loss, bullying for being gay, diabetes since I was 13, and am a recovering addict who has been clean and sober since Dec. 25th 2017.
Again, I had to overcome many uphill battles to get where I am, and if I can do it, you can too!
Many Blessings to you guys, and if anyone tells you you can't do something... do everything you can to prove them wrong!
"Two roads diverged in a wood and I...
I took the road less traveled and and that has made all the difference."- Robert Frost
Blessings,
Richie
