🌡️ Attention UPS Teamsters! With a major heat wave putting more than 75 million Americans under extreme heat alerts this week, it is urgent that all members understand and enforce the historic heat protections that we fought so hard to win last summer.
Under Article 18 of our new UPS Teamsters contract, you have the right to take a rest in a cool zone when you are experiencing symptoms of heat illness. This is in addition to your regular meal and ten-minute breaks (Article 18, Section 27.13). If you are feeling symptoms of heat illness, notify management and inform them you need to take an Article 18 cool-down break. If management directs you to use a cool zone, take your rest in that location. If management tells you to clock out or use a regular break to rest from heat, follow their instructions. Document the violation by taking pictures of the DIAD messages. Then, file a grievance under Article 18, Section 27 (13).
Article 18 also requires that management provide clean drinking water and an adequate number of clean, working ice machines (or have ice delivered and available).
By now, UPS should have installed a second working fan in every package car. If you are in a package car without a second fan, talk to your steward about filing a grievance. Any new package cars that come on the line must be equipped with air conditioning. For inside UPSers, additional fans throughout the buildings must be installed to improve air circulation (a total of 18,000 new building fans during the life of the contract).
Don't put packages ahead of your personal health in this dangerous heat! It's up to all of us to stick together and enforce our rights under Article 18.
