PASE PET STORY: MEET GIRL CAT😻

Girl Cat presented to PASE Emergency Service for a decreased appetite and a few day history of minimal to no stool production. On examination Girl Cat's colon (large intestine) palpated very distended and firm. Abdominal radiographs (x-rays) were obtained and revealed severe distension of her colon by the presence of many large f***l balls. After being transferred to our Internal Medicine Service for ongoing care and management Girl Cat was hospitalized for 24 hours in preparation for a procedure performed to remove all the f***l material from the large intestine called "deobstipation". She did great during her procedure and recovered uneventfully. A radiograph obtained after the procedure showed the presence of residual liquid in her colon and that all the f***l balls had been successfully removed! She has been doing very well since returning home and she has a few follow up visits planned with our Internal Medicine Team to ensure this situation is avoided in the future! 🙏🥰

Girl Cat's (GC for short) owner's say she is the pickiest eater of all time, thrives in winter, adores a heating pad and laying under the Christmas tree. If she doesn’t like her food she will p**p where you will find it to make sure you know. She is our fearless leader and she is the sweetest. 😜

MEET Dr. Lillie Davis, DVM, DACVIM (Oncology): PASE's Oncology Doctor who will be leading our next Virtual CE event: "Feline Mammary Carcinoma: Another Reason to Spay", and we can hardly wait!🤩

Dr. Lillie Davis is a board-certified Veterinary Oncologist and a native of the Bronx, New York. She is a three-time, first-generation Ivy League graduate and the sixth Black veterinary oncologist in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, ACVIM (of six total).👏

After spending her childhood fantasizing about making a difference in the world, she set her sights on becoming a veterinarian and fulfilled her teenage dream of going to Cornell University, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Animal Science (2009) and her veterinary medical degree (2014). During her time at Cornell, she did research in a parasitology laboratory for 8 years, where she published her first scientific paper on cuterebra parasites in cats. She then went on to complete a one-year small animal rotating internship at Purdue University in 2015 and returned to Cornell University to complete a three-year residency in Medical Oncology in 2018. During her residency, she published her second scientific paper on Acute Myeloid Leukemia in dogs. She became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Oncology) in 2018.😍

Dr. Davis’ areas of special interest include fostering the human-animal bond, improving the quality of life of her patients with equal parts evidence-based medicine, compassion, and integrity.🥰

When not in the hospital, Dr. Davis enjoys spending time with her fur babies: 2 cats and a 1 dog (Jacket, Pants, and Chalupa), her partner, and trying new cuisines.

At PASE, we're here for you 24/7, 365 days a year—even on Labor Day! 🐾 Whether it’s an emergency or urgent care, our doors are always open to ensure your pets get the care they need, whenever they need it.

08/28/2024

For those who do not have pets in their lives, it may be hard for them to comprehend the deep and profound grief that comes with losing a beloved pet. Whether it be a furry friend, a feathered companion, or an unusual pet, the bond we share with them runs deep. They become a cherished part of our family and our daily lives. Coping with the loss of a pet is a unique experience for everyone, but taking the time to remember and honor them can help ease the pain of their absence.

On August 28th, we observe Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day, a special day to honor and celebrate the lives of our beloved pets who have passed on. Some believe that when our pets die, they make their way to a place called the Rainbow Bridge, where they patiently wait for us until we are reunited in the afterlife. Whether or not you believe in the concept of the Rainbow Bridge, this day serves as a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the pets who have left a lasting impact on our hearts and lives.

Take a moment to reminisce about the wonderful memories you shared with your pet. Look through old photographs and recall the joy and love they brought into your life. This day is dedicated to honoring the special pets who have left paw prints on our hearts.

🐾EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Meet Andrea Duld, CVT🤩

Meet Andrea one of PASE's emergency and critical care technicians. If Andrea is not doing treatments for patients, you can find her snuggling and kissing them. 😘

Andrea, a native of Philadelphia but raised in Buxcount, has always had a strong affinity for animals. Even as a child, she gravitated towards playing with My Little Ponies and stuffed animals instead of Barbies or dolls, a clear indicator of her innate passion for caring for creatures. During her teenage years, Andrea discovered her love for horses and enjoyed nothing more than the bond she formed with them as they embarked on solitary adventures in the beauty of nature.

In 2006, Andrea embarked on her first job in the field of Veterinary Medicine at a general practice. It was at this moment that she experienced an undeniable epiphany - Vet Med was undeniably her true calling. Andrea relishes the joy of witnessing her furry patients recover and return home, but she also finds immense satisfaction in the diagnostic process. She thrives on unraveling the mystery of her patients' conditions and devising the optimal treatment plans for them - a true detective in the realm of animal healthcare.

Beyond the confines of her workplace, Andrea extends her passion for saving lives by serving as a foster for Cat's Bridge to Rescue. Additionally, Andrea finds great pleasure in embarking on adventures with her beloved Boston Terrier mix, Stella. Andrea also loves going on adventures with her best friend exploring scenic parks or embarking on epic cross-country road trips.

Furthermore, Andrea actively participates in local car shows, showcasing her appreciation for everything from antique cars to muscle cars. Additionally, she has a keen interest in mixed martial arts, particularly Krav Maga. This form of self-defense empowers women to embrace their inner strength, eliminating the need for external support or reliance.

At home, Andrea is joined by her two cats, Mimi and Naomi. While they may not offer the most exemplary support system due to Andrea's passion for fostering kittens, they are nonetheless beloved members of the household. 🤩

PASE PET STORY: Meet Cosmos 🤩🐾

Cosmos, a 3 year old mini schnauzer, ended up at PASE in May when he suddenly developed severe bloody diarrhea and vomiting due a potentially life threatening condition called hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome. He was hospitalized for multiple days, requiring a canine plasma and albumin transfusion. Luckily with the great care he received at PASE, he was able to make a full recovery! His parents, Jane and Larry, have shared that he won a mutt strut competition recently and is back to doing what he loves- hiking through the Wissahickon, hanging out with feline brother Pad Thai, and eating chicken and apples. His parents want to say “We are so grateful to PASE for saving our pup’s life! We appreciate how attentive the staff were to meeting Cosmos’ needs and allowing us to come visit Cosmos whenever we could. Will always come to PASE if there ever is an emergency- but hopefully never again!”

PASE PET STORY: Meet Crush! 🤩

Crush is a very sweet, energetic young french bulldog who came to see PASE Neurology this year. He always loves to chase his ball at the park, but one day the Mulcahy family noticed that he was hesitant to play. Within about a day, he was completely unable to use his hind limbs. He was taken to PASE and an MRI was performed that day. The MRI showed that his spinal cord was being severely compressed by an extruded intervertebral disc, a condition that can affect many breeds, but is sadly very common in French Bulldogs. He was taken immediately to surgery and his spinal cord was decompressed. By the next morning, he was already starting to move his hind limbs, and within about 2 weeks he was able to walk. The biggest challenge was trying to convince him to lay low after surgery! We are so happy that Crush is doing well, he is a wonderful little patient! 🥰

Owner Update: Crush is doing well! He is walking almost fully normally again and back to his playful ways. His recovery was much quicker than we expected! His favorite things to do are chase balls, play with his stuffed turtle (after his namesake, the turtle Crush from Finding Nemo), and cuddle on the couch. He has learned to go up and down little doggy stairs to get onto the couch and his favorite reward is peanut butter!

08/16/2024

At PASE, our goal is to improve every situation and enhance the experience for each individual patient. This commitment extends to every aspect of care, including adding a touch of fun to their bandages. By incorporating cheerful and colorful designs, we aim to make the healing process a little brighter and more enjoyable for our patients, bringing smiles and comfort during their recovery.

PASE PET STORY: Meet Monroe! 🥰

This PASE Pet Story perfectly illustrates the necessity of having a round-the-clock emergency and critical care team. It highlights the crucial importance of time in managing critical care cases, where every moment is vital.🙏

Monroe, a 1-year-old cat, was brought to PASE at 3 am after falling from a 7th-story window. She had managed to open the flap of a window AC unit. Her owners spent 15 hours searching for her before bringing her directly to PASE.

Dr. Romano and the overnight emergency and critical care team immediately began stabilization with IV fluids and pain medications. Dr. Romano diagnosed Monroe with a jaw fracture and a ruptured bladder. Monroe was admitted to the hospital for ongoing treatments and diagnostics, where her care was transferred to Dr. Zager. Monroe received intensive care over the next 24 hours, including contrast-assisted x-rays to determine the extent of her bladder tear. After a challenging first day, she underwent bladder repair surgery with Dr. Samuel, with Dr. Zatroch closely supervising her anesthesia. Despite the difficulty of the surgery, Dr. Samuel successfully completed the repair, and Monroe returned to the ICU for recovery. A temporary feeding tube was placed to ensure adequate nutrition while she recovered enough for a second surgery for her jaw. Over the next three days, Monroe improved drastically and transitioned off her IV medications. She was discharged after her five-day hospital stay to her very happy family.🤗

Monroe still has more ahead of her on her road to recovery, as we plan for her jaw surgery to ensure she has the best life ahead of her. ❤️‍🩹

She has a special interest in minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, arthroscopy, minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis, and interventional radiological procedures such as SUB placement. 😲

Dr. Samuel is also skilled in thoracic surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, upper airway surgery, oncologic surgical procedures, and fracture repair. PASE PET STORY: MEET PEPPER! 😻

Pepper, also known as Bean, is a young, small, sweet, and lovable Exotic Shorthair cat who was evaluated at PASE for chronic sneezing and nasal signs. Exotic Shorthair cats often have very small nares (stenotic nares) that can further complicate their breathing, limiting airflow into their nose. A CT-scan of Pepper's head was performed to evaluate her nasal passages followed by nasal biopsies to help determine the underlying cause of her symptoms. She also underwent corrective surgery to open up her nares and ease her breathing. Pepper was ultimately diagnosed with inflammatory rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal passages), which can be treated with medications!👏🤗

Pepper is back home with her older brother Pancake doing the things she loves most, snuggling, making biscuits, chasing Pancake and relaxing on the deck. One of Peppers funny quirks is that she only drinks water out of her own personal cup.🥰

PASE PET STORY: Meet Mateo! 😻

Mateo was referred to the PASE Medical Oncology Service due to a lung mass that was found on chest x-rays with his primary veterinarian. His case is a prime example of collaboration between different departments as Mateo was seen first by the Medical Oncology Service, who then recommended surgery. Advanced imaging (CT scan) was obtained by the Radiology Service to determine if it was possible to remove the lung mass and make sure there was not any evidence of spread of the tumor. Since surgery looked feasible on the CT scan, Mateo underwent a lateral intercostal thoracotomy, meaning an incision into the chest between the ribs, to remove the lung lobe and associated mass with the Surgery Department. Open chest surgery would also not be possible without our anesthesiologist and anesthesia services here at PASE. Mateo did well for surgery thanks to all the teams involved, and great news, the mass biopsy came back as non-cancerous, and Mateo is back to his energetic, happy self at home.👏🤗

Here is what Mateo's owner had to say about this sweet boy: "Mateo is the perpetual kitten, always eager to explore, play with enthusiasm, a social butterfly, and has never refused a meal and/or snack in his life. He is the most loving little boy in the world. 🥰 People who say they hate cats, fall in love with Mateo instantly the moment they meet.
The joy, happiness, laughter, and love Mateo has brought into my life the past 15&1/2 years is truly immeasurable."😍

Please read and share to spread awareness and easy affordable ways to prevent Parvo. We unfortunately have to say good bye to way to many puppies and dogs due to Parvo. Lucky for Skye, she was rescued by the amazing dedicated team of The Rescue Express and thanks to life saving donations, Skye is on the road to recovery. Not all the dogs we see are strong enough to be able to go home and not all have the finical support of an amazing community and rescue.

Many of you have followed Skye’s story. Skye was rescued by The Rescue Express on 7/3/24 and immediately admitted to Philadelphia Animal Specialty & Emergency - PASE for treatment for Parvo for one week. She was near death and there were many days when we did not know if she would recover or die. She suffered immensely. In total (between three medical facilities) Skye’s medical bills reached almost $14,000. That is staggering. We are so grateful for the medical care she received and the donations and supporters that made that medical care possible.

But now we want to talk about the fact that all this suffering, expense, and worry was completely preventable. What would it have cost to prevent this? The answer is probably less than $200. Yup, that’s right.

We want to increase Parvo Virus Awareness.

It is estimated that Parvovirus infects more than 330,000 puppies a year(1). If left untreated as many as 91% of the puppies infected will die from Parvovirus(2). Unfortunately, only 44% percent of people said they were aware of the disease and its symptoms in a recent survey(3).

So what can we do?

Help share this post. Spread the word and increase awareness about this deadly and preventable disease.

Vaccination to prevent Parvo:

Parvovirus is deadly, extremely expensive to treat, and very preventable.

The parvovirus vaccine is included in a combination vaccine (sometimes abbreviated DAPP, DA2PP, or similarly) that also protects dogs against some other common canine viruses.

You can have your dog vaccinated during your dog’s preventative health exam at your veterinarian. But there are also low-cost vaccination clinics available to help ensure everyone has access to vaccination for their dogs. The costs for the parvo/distemper combo vaccination is generally around $20 to $100 at these clinics.

Here are some links for resources in PA:

Low-cost vaccination clinics:
Humane Society: https://humanepa.org/healthy-pets/walk-in-clinic/
SPCA: https://www.pspca.org/vaccine-clinics
PetCo: https://stores.petco.com/pa/allentown/vaccinations-allentown-pa-729.html

According to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) , the Parvovirus vaccine is considered “core,” and is recommended for all dogs. Puppies younger than 16 weeks should receive their first dose at between 6 and 8 weeks of age, then two more doses 2-4 weeks apart. Dogs older than 16 weeks with no previous vaccination or an unknown history should receive two doses 2-4 weeks apart.

If your adult dog hasn’t been vaccinated yet, or is overdue or missing some vaccinations, it’s not too late. Ask your veterinarian about a recommended vaccination program based on your dog’s age and needs.

How is Parvo Spread?

The AVMF says “Canine parvovirus is easily spread by direct contact with infected dogs, contact with f***s (stool) from infected dogs, or contact with virus-contaminated surfaces. Such surfaces can include kennels, food and water bowls, collars and leashes, and the hands and clothing of people who handle infected dogs. Contact between domestic dogs, feral dogs, and wild canids also may play a role in spreading the disease.”
