EwingCole is reshaping our approach to in the built environment.

Over the past year, our team has been hard at work, laying the foundation for our Social Equity in Design (SEID) Initiative, which recognizes the critical intersection between the built environment, environmental degradation, and human rights. SEID is a bold step towards putting at the forefront of our sustainability strategies. Our goal is simple: to eliminate the negative impacts of the built environment on traditionally overlooked or underserved communities.

While sustainability has always been a core value for us, we understand that social equity can sometimes take a backseat due to its complexity. But with SEID, we're making a deliberate effort to change that narrative, taking a holistic approach to equity within the building arts industry.

One key aspect of SEID is our focus on the material supply chain. It's not just about what happens within the buildings we design but also the broader impact of the materials we use. That's why we're committed to identifying ways to increase equity within product specifications, ensuring our choices support frontline communities and fragile ecosystems.

Environmental injustices, such as racism and forced labor, persist within material supply chains. Through SEID, we're leveraging our collective impact to address these injustices by specifying products that uphold ethical standards and promote social equity.

This , we invite you to join us in committing to creating a more just and sustainable future for all. https://www.ewingcole.com/services/sustainability-2/

Citizens Bank Park has given us 20 years of great memories, should be good for 100: Phillies owner John Middleton. 04/03/2024

Philadelphia sports fans recently honored the 20-year anniversary of Veterans Stadium's demolition. The stadium was the former home of the Philadelphia Phillies and Philadelphia Eagles. Citizens Bank Park later replaced it.

Over the last twenty years, Citizens Bank Park, playing host to unforgettable moments in Philadelphia sports history, has woven its way into the very fabric of the city. The park, as Phillies owner John Middleton put it to The Philadelphia Inquirer, has aged like fine wine since it opened in 2004.

As the park's original planners and designers, our team has been proud to partner with the Phillies over these two decades, helping the park evolve so that it can be enjoyed by future players and fans for generations to come.

REGENXBIO’s Research and Development Facility, Maryland, US 03/05/2024

REGENXBIO Inc.'s Headquarters in Rockville, MD, provides the company with complete control over the entire gene therapy manufacturing process. The state-of-the-art current good manufacturing practice (GMP) facility is a five-story building. Its interior construction was carried out in two phases, encompassing approximately 20,000ft2 of clean room space.

The clean room suite was strategically positioned on the highest (fifth) floor, with the elevation of this floor heightened. Additionally, the design team included the most spacious penthouse allowed by the local authorities, carefully ensuring that it wouldn't be considered an extra building floor, thereby preventing an increase in the overall building height. https://ow.ly/qoyx50QKicO

As the nation’s oldest country club, the has a rich sporting heritage and provides preeminent recreational and social experiences for its members, their families, and friends. The 350-acre Flourtown Campus hosts a wide variety of sports, including tennis, paddle tennis, squash, cricket, pickleball, and more.

As part of a long-range strategic plan for the club, our design team reprogrammed The Great Lawn, which boasts 21 grass courts to support a number of sporting activities.

For the main clubhouse exterior, we installed a new skylight over the two-story bar space, creating a stunning and open atmosphere. On the roof, new dormers with operable windows were installed where former dormers existed before they were damaged in a fire some years ago. Crowning the list of exterior improvements is a cupola at the peak of the gabled roof. Each of these carefully considered design elements serves a unique purpose and enhances the club’s experience while respecting its historical context.

We recently undertook a significant renovation project at a corporate research and development facility in Manchester, NH. This design aimed to transform an existing workspace into a post-pandemic environment, fostering flexibility and modern and industrial aesthetics.

The 98,000-square-foot renovation, situated within a repurposed mill along the scenic riverbanks, is the initial phase of a comprehensive multi-stage project encompassing the entire building. Inspired by the site’s industrial history and lush surroundings, the design integrates natural materials, drawing from the greenery and adjacent river. Embracing the principles of biophilia, the layout enhances the connection between indoors and outdoors, accentuated by ample natural light.

Along the banks of Lake Superior, Essentia Health's St. Mary's Medical Center redefines the patient experience and challenges contemporary strategies with bold, innovative, and sustainable solutions.

Our design team and partners envisioned a hospital environment that is comfortable, welcoming, and efficient for patients, families, and staff. Its iconic façade pays homage to the rolling fog of the largest lake in the world and provides striking views throughout each of its 19 floors. Its public areas have the engaging warmth of hospitality spaces, and its patient-centric design drives impactful outcomes by consolidating adaptable inpatient rooms, procedure rooms, and flexibly planned outpatient spaces.

At nearly a million SF and the length of 2 football fields, this monumental hospital remains a community-based hospital that puts patients and families first.

Lead Structural Engineers Colleen Blackwell, P.E. and Stephen Bartal, PE, take us inside the challenges and triumphs in STRUCTURE Magazine behind this monumental healthcare project.

Steel Trusses Tie Past to Present Within Penn’s Historic Burk-Berkman Boathouse 10/04/2023

This is how you blend history and modernity! The Burk-Bergman Boathouse at the University of Pennsylvania, dating back to 1874-75, gets a stunning update by EwingCole that opened this year. Design elements like its new erg room trusses honor its legacy while adding a sleek touch for the 21st century.

“They are inspired by two elements: the existing historic wood trusses in the original 1874 structure and the more contemporary rigging and outriggers on the carbon fiber boats used in competition today. We treated them as a metaphor for the evolution of the sport." - Regional Director of Design Andrew Donaldson-Evans, AIA, LEED AP.
