Prior-authorizations required by insurance plans for medications and studies ordered by your health care providers delay care, add cost to care and cause frustration for both you as patients and your health care providers. Currently, many states along Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions are experiencing very poor air quality due to smoke coming from numerous fires in Canada. Smoke inhalation is dangerous for everyone; however, the elderly, children, pregnant women and those with underlying heart and lung conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease and interstitial lung disease are at greater risk. It is essential to avoid being outside if you do not have to go out. If you must, minimize your time outdoors and wear a well-fitted mask. Exposure to the fine smoke particles is dangerous. You can experience burning eyes, irritate throat and sinuses. At home, keep windows and doors closed. If you have asthma or chronic obstructive lung disease, make sure you have your rescue inhaler handy. Picture below is from phila.gov.
Telemedicine proved to be a valuable tool to deliver care during the unprecedented challenge presented by the COVID19 pandemic. As we continue to emerge out of the pandemic, we will continue to provide virtual appointments only on Thursdays. On all other days, we will provide in-person appointments. In response to patient desire for improved access to care, we now allow appointment booking online. You can do so at www.phaadultmedicine.com
For the past 5 years, I have had the privilege of being a member of the Planning Steering Committee, giving guidance to the U54 Partnership among Temple University, Hunter College and Fox Chase Cancer Center. The partnership works to address cancer disparities by pursuing research projects and community outreach. As an independent community medical practitioner, I was able to give that unique perspective, particularly with addressing social determinants of health and their impact on health disparities.
