📢Woodmere Art Museum staff, Board of Trustees, supporters, planners, and friends gathered THURSDAY, November 30, 2023, for the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Frances M. Maguire Hall for Art and Education. In attendance (pictured from left to right): Chris Maguire; Mary Ann Boyer; Jamie Maguire; Woodmere Art Museum Board President James Alexandre; Franny Glomb; Woodmere Art Museum Director and CEO William Valerio; Maguire Foundation President and CEO Megan Maguire Nicoletti; Maguire Foundation Founder and Chairman James J. Maguire, Sr.; PA State Rep Tarik Khan; Matthew Baird, Baird Architects; Woodmere Art Museum Director of Institutional Advancement Anne Standish; Jeff Krieger, Krieger & Associates Architects, Inc.; Darren Damone, Andropogon; and Jane Sullivan, The Sullivan Company.

The Maguire Foundation has generously given $10 million to Woodmere Art Museum for this endeavor, funding a major improvement to the institution and prompting it to rename the historic building. The gift from the Maguire Foundation, coupled with other generous gifts from the community, will fund renovation plans that include turning the spacious parlors and bedrooms of the 19th-century mansion into galleries for the museum’s permanent collection of works by Philadelphia’s artists, as well as a hands-on children’s art & education center, and public programming spaces. 🙌

With construction underway, this project is on schedule with anticipated completion in Spring 2025.

Calling all teachers … we have an exciting opportunity for you to earn 3 hours of your PA Act 48 requirement!

Cultural Heritage and Historical Context in the Art of Barbara Bullock will create learning experiences that strengthen social studies curriculums by applying visual critical thinking skills to appreciate cultural heritage and history. Take part in a series of activities that show how Bullock’s work was propelled by the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, a time when Black American artists began consciously addressing their African heritage and their experiences as African Americans. This workshop will demonstrate the importance of teaching history and cultural heritage as a means to connect with the past, inform how we see the present, and mindfully imagine the future.

Teachers will receive lesson plan resources for classroom use. This workshop is aligned with Common Core Academic standards.

🌟It was STANDING ROOM-ONLY for the Gallery Talk with Barbara Bullock and art historians Leslie King Hammond and Lowery Stokes Sims last Saturday, November 4th. Hammond and Sims, renowned experts, led the thought-provoking conversation about the artist’s illustrious career. The discussion was further amplified during the Q&A with many well-recognized artists who were in attendance, in full participation.

Enjoy the below excerpt from the “Barbara Bullock: Fearless Vision” catalogue, which captures the oral history of Bullock’s development over sixty years of creative practice.

SIMS: You have all these people supporting you, providing input, examples. Tell us about your style, how it developed over the years, and how you reached all these different possibilities of abstraction and figuration.

BULLOCK: I started out more figurative because, basically, you just naturally do that for portraits. Because I worked with a lot of dancers and musicians, I began to draw dancers constantly. Dancers are amazing—what they do with their bodies and their energy. I began to draw on my own, without models, knowing that it had to be right because I was always working with them.

KING HAMMOND: So you were interested in capturing motion and movement?

BULLOCK: Movement, definitely. You do a lot of drawing before you begin to paint because it’s sort of like a fear there when you see the painting. It’s like, God, can I really do this? I had hundreds of drawings hidden all over the place. At one of my jobs, they found the drawings. They didn’t fire me, though.

Telling the Story of Philadelphia’s Art and Artists

Woodmere Art Museum is dedicated to the art and artists of Philadelphia. The building and grounds, together with the core of the collection, are the gifts of Charles Knox Smith (1845– 1916), who purchased the estate in 1898 with the intent of transforming it into a showcase for his great collection of art.

A passionate collector of contemporary art in his day, Smith was born of modest means and his life story represents the American dream. He lived in various parts of urban Philadelphia most of his life and purchased the Woodmere estate with the grand ambition to provide spiritual encounters with art in the context of nature’s beauty. Smith opened Woodmere’s doors to the public in 1910.

Woodmere continues to honor Smith’s vision to bring art and nature together and in recent years has acquired important examples of outdoor sculpture by Harry Bertoia and Dina Wind, and Robinson Fredenthal. The collection consists of more than 8,000 works of art. Woodmere’s vibrant, changing exhibitions serve as a platform for an ongoing series of opportunities: family events, tours, gallery talks, lectures, panel discussions, studio art classes, film, and music performances.
