Maternity Care Coalition

Strengthening families, inspiring change.

Since 1980, Maternity Care Coalition has assisted more than 145,000 families throughout Southeastern Pennsylvania, focusing particularly on neighborhoods with high rates of poverty, infant mortality, health disparities, and changing immigration patterns. We know a family’s needs change as they go through the pregnancy and their child’s first years and we offer a range of services and programs for every step along the way.

The barriers to paid family leave in Pennsylvania 07/02/2024

Paid family leave makes a difference in birthing people's and families' lives.

In 2012, Alana Griffin had no choice but to give up her home and move into a women’s shelter with her infant son, even though she was on maternity leave.

Situations like this happen far too often to families and birthing people. Passing the Pennsylvania paid family leave bill will ensure stability.

Men especially fathers, need help too. Recognizing Men’s Mental Health and Father’s Day goes beyond a month and day long observance. It’s a lifelong fight for men and fathers to receive the safe space and place to air out their grievances without fear of being judged or silenced.

Avoiding Paternal Mental Health Issues can weaken father engagement and participation in families.

MCC's Fatherhood Initiative is designed to meet men, fathers and father-figures where they are and equip them with the tools necessary to liven each father’s parenting journey. To learn more about this initiative visit: https://loom.ly/ocScsNk

Lack of paid family leave in Pennsylvania forces many mothers to forgo critical bonding time to ensure financial stability 06/07/2024

We worked with the Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics on the impact of paid family leave. Paid family leave is essential for all families, especially those with babies in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Parental involvement during the baby’s NICU stay can affect the child’s long-term health and development. Parental stress can also impact a child’s health. Paid family leave allows NICU parents to spend valuable time with their babies but also gives them time to cope with the emotional challenges and stress.

For immigrants, fear and confusion remain barriers to prenatal care 06/04/2024

Our Early Head Start Program & Facilities Associate, Angelique Rivera, participated in a new Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania as a Spanish-speaking interviewer.

The study is shedding light on how the cost of healthcare and possible deportation is affecting prenatal care for Latino immigrants.

Participants revealed they were hesitant to receive prenatal care because of the high cost of healthcare, that their immigration status would be reported, and confusion about insurance coverage and the health system.

Prenatal care is vital to creating healthy babies and healthy birthing people.

For immigrants, fear and confusion remain barriers to prenatal care Years later, the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant policies have continued to sow fear and confusion among immigrants in need of health care.
