Philadelphia Bar Foundation
Our vision is a Philadelphia community in which everyone has equal access to justice. http://www.philabarfoundation.org/
❄ Happy Holidays! ❄
As we take time at the end of the year to give thanks, to celebrate, and to plan for a new year, please consider giving to the Philadelphia Bar Foundation.
Structural inequalities and racism pervade civil legal matters, from housing, to unemployment, to immigration. With your support the Philadelphia Bar Foundation works with nonprofit partners, law firms and businesses throughout the region to identify trends, respond to crises, and cultivate and share resources to help our community prosper.

Please consider the Philadelphia Bar Foundation as you make your End of Year Giving plans. Because of generous donors like you, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation is able to:
-Provide free, high-quality training to public interest lawyers. The R. Nicholas Gimbel Fund for Legal Excellence allows legal aid attorneys to learn skills and techniques that’ll ensure they are giving the best service possible to their clients.
-Connect law students with valuable, unique experiences. The Honorable Albert W. Sheppard Scholarship Fund supports law students in a year-long clerkship position with the Commerce Case Management Program in Philadelphia.
-Offer educational loan repayment assistance. The Morris M. Shuster Public Interest Fellowship Program provides educational loan repayment assistance in the form of forgivable loans to qualifying legal aid attorneys.
-Network with nearly 40 nonprofit partners and provide unrestricted grants. The Philadelphia Bar Foundation provides grants for local nonprofits to aid with general operating expenses, allowing them to continue strengthening legal aid services and increase accessibility to justice for members of our community.
And much more!

In 1967, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation gave its first unrestricted grants to nonprofit partners for a total of $1,950. Today, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation has provided over $10.5 million in unrestricted grants to support the efforts of nonprofit partners throughout Philadelphia.
As part of its mission, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation provides unrestricted grants to uplift the lives of individuals and families burdened by poverty, tackle racial and economic inequities within the legal system, and break the cycles of systemic racial and economic inequalities perpetuated by unjust structures and policies.
Our nonprofit partners are integral to the fight for racial justice. Structural inequalities and racism pervade civil legal matters, from housing, to unemployment, to immigration.

As we wrap up 2023, we offer a heartfelt thank you and congratulations to Meredith Auten as she concludes her term as President. Since assuming the responsibility of President two and a half years ago, Meredith has led the Philadelphia Bar Foundation with indefatigable determination and optimism. Jessica Hilburn-Holmes, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation says, “All of us at the Philadelphia Bar Foundation are beyond appreciative of Meredith’s incredible commitment to the organization and the generous investment of her time, talent, and experience”.
Meredith is a partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP and has been on the Board of Trustees since 2012. Meredith will be turning the Bar Foundation Presidency to Niki Ingram. She will remain involved in the Foundation and is looking forward to seeing Niki's ideas come to life.

In 2023, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation began its Justice Matters Forum a series of conversations around issues in the law and the work done by the legal community to improve equity in our society and deliver on the promise of equal justice under law. Lawyers throughout the city, civil rights experts, and nonprofit partners such as the Women’s Law Project, the Manzoni Center, and CeaseFirePA provided their expertise to lead stimulating discussion and engage the broader community.
Since 1964, the Bar Foundation advocates for access to justice for all individuals, promotes innovation in the provision of legal services, and provides grants and technical services to address unmet legal needs and educate the public on legal matters. By working closely with our nonprofit partners, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation continues to develop programming, such as the Justice Matters Forum to educate and keep the legal community at the center of the movement for social justice.
With your donation, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation can continue working on programs such as Justice Matters. Click here to give:

When you make a charitable donation to the Philadelphia Bar Foundation you narrow the gap between the needs of our community and available resources.
According to the Pew Foundation, “Philadelphians had any number of worries on their minds, including a slowing economy, increasing housing costs, lingering inflation, and a stubbornly high poverty rate. Most of all, they worried about the rampant gun violence and high level of crime in the city, a couple of the pandemic’s disturbing legacies. “
For more information about the needs of Philadelphians, please read the Pew Foundation’s State of the City report from June 2023:
Philadelphia 2023: State of the City In 2022, increasing numbers of Philadelphians re-engaged in the more public aspects of urban life, commuting to their workplaces again, resuming indoor dining at area restaurants, and attending concerts and other events around town.
With your financial support the Philadelphia Bar Foundation works with nonprofit partners, law firms and businesses throughout the region to identify trends, respond to crises, and cultivate and share resources to help our community prosper.

The Philadelphia Bar Foundation gives thanks to our donors, Unified Giving Supporters, and our nonprofit partners. With the assistance of people like you, the Philadelphia Bar Foundation engages the legal community to strengthen the image of the legal profession and provide rewarding opportunities for individual lawyers to participate in closing the access to justice gap.
When you support the Philadelphia Bar Foundation, you help us recognize the amazing achievements of the civil legal aid community. This year Professor Seth Kreimer of the University of Pennsylvania Carey School of Law received the Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award for a career dedicated to the fight for equal justice.
The Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award was originally established in 1979 by the Apothaker family, as the Louis D. Apothaker Award, to memorialize the legal accomplishments and community work of the late Louis D. Apothaker, a past president of the Philadelphia Bar Foundation. The Award was renamed to the Philadelphia Bar Foundation Award in 2005 and continues to recognize individuals who have made significant contributions to the pursuit of equal justice in our region.

Crawford v Commonwealth of Pennsylvania asks the court to strike down the Firearm Preemption Laws so that Philadelphia and other municipalities can enact new measures to protect citizens against gun violence.
The next Justice Matters panel discussion will cover Crawford v Commonwealth of Pennsylvania from the people who know it best.
Speakers include:
Jasmeet Ahuja, Hogan Lovells
Ben Geffen, Public Interest Law Center
Stanley Crawford, Black Male Community Council of Philadelphia & lead plaintiff
Nancy Gordon, former President of CeaseFirePA
