For Navajo Code Talkers Day, we were joined by community members and descendants of the Navajo Code talkers at the Arizona State Capitol to pay homage to the incredible sacrifices and bravery of the Navajo Code Talkers. Today our CEO Jolyana Begay-Kroupa offered an opening prayer, we heard Harmony Adora Begay, Miss Navajo Pine High School 2023-2024, sing the National Anthem in Diné Bizaad, Diandra Benally, Phoenix Indian Center Board President &
General Counsel, Ft McDowell-Yavapai Nation offered opening remarks, and the Ira H. Hayes American Legion Post #84 paid tribute to the Navajo Code Talkers with a 21 Gun Salute.

During World War II, 29 Navajo men were recruited to develop a code for the United States Marine Corps that would lead to victory for the war effort in the Pacific region. Their contributions were so significant the Navajo Code Talkers grew to more than 400 soldiers and were kept secret from the public until 1968. Navajo Code Talker Day is a day to remember and honor their sacrifices and incredible contributions to victory and the freedoms we enjoy today.

08/14/2024

August 14, 2024 marks Navajo Code Talker Day. The United States Marine Corps possessed an extraordinary, unbreakable code during World War II: Diné Bizaad - the Navajo language. Navajo Code Talkers were a part of United States Marine Corps who developed a code in Navajo to help defeat U.S enemies in World War II. Given their historic significance, the code talkers are underrepresented in National Archives special media. The code talker program wasn’t even revealed publicly until 1968. Due to the secret status of the operations, and probably unaware of the impact they would have, the Marine Corps did not extensively photograph or film the code talkers in action (National Archives, 2020). Learn about their story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QmiqnAQTTCI

The Phoenix Indian Center is offering a Kinaaldá (Navajo Coming of Age) series aimed at preparing for and providing families with Navajo cultural knowledge. This will include extensive workshops, activities, and lectures on various dates from September 2024 to January 2025. Kinaaldá is Navajo puberty ceremony for young girls transitioning mentally, physically, and spiritually into womanhood. Join as we come together as a community to create a circle of support to provide strength and traditional cultural teachings for our future matriarchs.

We are seeking a small cohort of 10 young participants and their families to handcraft materials for their future ceremonies. Navajo knowledge keepers will guide youth on how to:

- Sew a tłaakał (traditional skirt)
- Weave a sis łíchiʼii (sash belt)
- Craft a pair of kélchí (moccasins)
- Make a tsii' tł'óół (Diné hair tie)
- And as well as listen to the Kinaaldá origins and teachings.

Note: Young women who have NOT had their menstrual cycle yet are only allowed to participate.

Join us for an information session on August 24th from 10AM to 1:00PM at the Phoenix Indian Center. A panel of former Miss Navajos will provide words of encouragement. In addition, traditional practitioner, Paul Long Sr. will provide a cultural presentation on Kinaaldá preparation.
