Friends of Butterfly

We are pioneering children's palliative care in Changsha, China. We believe that every child deserves love and dignity in both life and death.

At Butterfly Children’s Hospices we provide loving care and treatment for children with life-threatening illnesses. We have a children’s hospice in Changsha, and support a local project in Nanjing with specialist nursing care for palliative children. Some children have been abandoned, others are brought to us when families can no longer face the journey alone. But no matter how small or how sick, we give each child the love, care and medical attention they need.

As 2024 begins, we would like to thank you for the support for our Butterflies over the years. As the new year begins, sadly, Friends of Butterfly is wrapping up. The small funds that were left in the account have been transferred to China, continuing to help children with palliative care needs and their families. Children’s palliative care continues to go from strength to strength in Nanjing and ChangSha, and we couldn’t be more proud of what has been achieved over the years. Thank you.

*Important News about our work in China*

The children in Changsha and Nanjing, their nannies, nurses, and staff are always close to our hearts. We have been working hard in support of the Butterfly Home in Changsha and the Rainbow Center in Nanjing.

Our biggest challenge continues to be getting your donations into China. We were lucky to be able to transfer $30,000 to the Butterfly Home in 2022 and $50,000 to the Rainbow Center January of this year. However, we have been advised this will no longer be an option.

On the adoption front, things remain static. No new paperwork has been started for the Butterflies who are ready, and those with paperwork complete including John, Hailey and Ronan still wait. We remain hopeful that the international channels of adoption will open again and that these children will one day be united with their forever families.

Privacy rules in China are changing as well, which means we cannot continue to post the beautiful faces we used to share with you.

Therefore, it is with heavy hearts that we have made the difficult decision to pause our work until we can see a way forward. Until we have a viable way of getting regular donations into China we cannot accept donations or crib sponsorships.

Together we have achieved so much, and cared for so many beautiful children. Too many have died in loving arms, others are living their happily-ever-afters with their forever families, and some still spend their days with loving ayis. There are Children’s Palliative Care units in several regional hospitals and social workers serving families in Changsha - keeping them together and supporting them in their time of need.

In Changsha and Nanjing, the sound of children’s giggles still fill the corridors, there is music playing throughout the homes, and above all, every child is cherished and loved. Birthdays, Christmas and Chinese New Year are celebrated, nannies and nurses continue to go above and beyond. We are grateful for their dedication and commitment.

We want to thank you all for the years of support that enabled the Butterfly Home and the Rainbow Center to serve so many children and families. They are keeping the mission alive and we will look forward with hope that Friends of Butterfly will someday be able to partner with them again.
